Chapter 7 - The Toxic Web of Lies Unravels in the Dark

The wind outside the cabin began to howl violently,

rattling the old glass windows in their rotting wooden frames,

sounding exactly like a chorus of angry ghosts screaming into the freezing night.

Hannah scrambled quickly toward the front door,

snatching her heavy winter boots from the dirty floor mat,

her small hands shaking uncontrollably as she tried desperately to pull them over her cold feet.

Aaron groaned loudly from his position on the dusty floor,

rubbing his lower back where he had struck the hard firewood,

his dark eyes glaring up at me with a look of pure,

unfiltered hatred.

He was finally dropping the pathetic,

loving father act entirely,

revealing the cold,

calculating monster that had been hiding beneath his expensive suits and his charming smiles for all these years.

"You think you have won,"

he spat angrily,

spitting a small glob of blood onto the wooden floorboards,

having apparently bitten his own tongue when he fell backward.

"You think taking her out into that freezing storm is actually going to save you,

you stupid,

pathetic woman?"

"It is going to save her from you,"

I replied coldly,

refusing to let his toxic,

poisonous words penetrate my heavy armor,

refusing to let him play his sick psychological games ever again.

"You are going to federal prison for a very long time,

Aaron,

and you will never,

ever be allowed to see her sweet face again for the rest of your miserable life."

He laughed,

a dark,

humorless sound that scraped terribly against my exhausted nerves,

slowly pushing himself up into a sitting position,

his hands resting casually on his bent knees.

"The police will never believe a single word you say,"

he countered arrogantly,

his voice dripping with that familiar,

infuriating confidence that had always made me feel so incredibly small in the past.

"I am a highly respected professional in our community,

I have absolutely no criminal record,

and I will simply tell them that you attacked me in a blind,

jealous rage when you found out I took her on a harmless camping trip."

"I have the tablet,"

Hannah suddenly yelled from the doorway,

her small,

brave voice cutting sharply through his toxic web of lies,

stopping his arrogant monologue completely in its tracks.

Aaron turned his head slowly to look at her,

genuine confusion spreading quickly across his bruised face,

clearly having no idea what she was talking about.

"I sent Mom a hidden message on my old gaming tablet before we left the house,"

she explained bravely,

standing as tall as she possibly could,

her tiny hands balled tightly into angry fists at her sides.

"I told her that you packed heavy bags,

and I told her that you were talking to Claire on the phone,

so the police already know that you planned this whole thing on purpose."

The absolute,

stunning silence that followed her brave declaration was heavier than the massive mountain storm raging outside,

a silence filled completely with Aaron's total,

devastating defeat.

He had always vastly underestimated Hannah's intelligence,

treating her like a foolish,

clueless accessory to his perfect life,

rather than the brilliant,

observant person she truly was.

The sudden realization that his own daughter had cleverly outsmarted him,

that she had completely dismantled his brilliant master plan with a broken,

outdated piece of technology,

finally pushed him straight over the edge into total madness.

With a terrifying,

animalistic roar of pure fury,

he lunged aggressively upward from the floor,

completely ignoring the heavy metal tire iron in my raised hand,

charging directly toward me like a wild,

cornered beast.

I swung the heavy weapon with absolutely everything I had,

aiming directly for his broad shoulder,

but he ducked surprisingly fast,

tackling me violently around my waist with his heavy arms.

The overwhelming momentum threw us both backward against the rough log wall,

the breath exploding painfully from my lungs as my back struck the hard,

unyielding wood.

The tire iron slipped completely from my numb fingers,

clattering loudly across the floorboards,

sliding completely out of my desperate reach,

leaving me entirely unarmed against his superior physical strength.

"Run,

Hannah,"

I screamed desperately,

struggling wildly against his heavy,

suffocating grip,

using my sharp fingernails to claw aggressively at his angry face.

"Run out to the car and lock the doors right now,

do not look back!"

I heard the front door bang loudly against the wall,

and the sound of her small boots splashing rapidly into the freezing mud,

meaning she had finally escaped the cabin,

meaning she was finally out of his immediate,

dangerous reach.

Aaron cursed violently,

releasing my waist to strike me hard across my cheek with his open hand,

the sudden impact snapping my head violently to the side,

sending bright,

flashing stars dancing across my blurred vision.

But the physical pain only fueled my massive adrenaline rush,

igniting a primal,

unstoppable fire deep within my soul,

a fire that simply refused to let this terrible man win.

I brought my heavy knee up as hard as I could,

striking him directly in his stomach,

forcing a loud,

wheezing gasp from his lungs as he doubled over in sudden pain.

I pushed him forcefully away from me,

stumbling blindly toward the open front door,

bursting out into the freezing,

May you like

howling mountain storm,

leaving the warm glow of the terrible cabin far behind me.
