Chapter 28 - A Sister's Debt

The access road to Sector 4 ended at a rusted chain-link gate covered in warning signs: *DANGER — HIGH PRESSURE SPILLWAY — KEEP OUT.*
The heavy padlock on the gate had already been cut clean through with an industrial torch.
Fresh tire tracks cut through the wet gravel, leading down the steep concrete ramp toward the water's edge.
Arthur killed the truck's engine and headlights, letting the vehicle coast silently to a stop against the concrete retaining wall.
The deafening roar of water was already audible in the distance.
The morning drainage sequence had begun its preliminary pressurization cycle.
Arthur stepped out into the damp cold, holding the crowbar tightly in his right hand.
He opened the passenger door and lifted Lily out, keeping her tucked close against his side.
"Stay behind me, Lily. Whatever happens, you stay behind me," Arthur whispered.
Lily nodded solemnly, her small fingers clutching the fabric of his jeans.
Julian dragged himself out of the truck's bed, using a broken branch as an improvised crutch.
"The lower vault door is three levels down," Julian wheezed, his face pale and clammy. "Beneath the waterline."
They walked down the slick concrete ramp, descending into the belly of the concrete structure.
The air grew steadily colder, smelling of rust, stagnant river mud, and decaying vegetation.
Emergency red warning lights were flashing rhythmically along the damp concrete walls, accompanied by a rhythmic, mechanical horn that sounded every thirty seconds.
*HONK... HONK...*
Arthur reached the heavy steel blast door marked *GATE 4.*
The door was slightly ajar, secured only by a massive chain that had been looped through the handles.
Beside the lock, a single white rose had been jammed into the steel grating.
It was identical to the thousands of roses Arthur had ordered for the wedding wall.
Arthur pushed the heavy door open with his shoulder, the rusted hinges shrieking in protest.
Inside, a narrow metal catwalk hovered over a massive circular concrete chamber.
At the bottom of the chamber, twenty feet below the catwalk, a woman was tied to a heavy iron maintenance pillar.
Her head was hanging limp, her long dark hair soaked with condensation.
The water was already swirling around her ankles, rising rapidly from the floor grates.
"Eleanor!" Arthur shouted, his voice echoing off the cavernous concrete walls.
The woman slowly lifted her head.
Her face was gaunt, bruised, and streaked with dirt—but her eyes were Eleanor's.
"Arthur...?" she croaked, her voice barely audible over the roaring pumps.
May you like
Suddenly, a metallic click sounded from the shadows directly behind them on the catwalk.
Clara stepped out from behind a massive turbine housing, holding a black 9mm pistol leveled directly at Arthur’s chest.
