Chapter 14 - Cold Evidence

The stairs leading down into the darkness were cut from solid limestone.
Arthur descended one step at a time, keeping the beam of his flashlight aimed strictly ahead.
At the bottom of the flight sat a subterranean room completely untouched by the fire above.
It was a bunker.
There was a cot with clean flannel sheets neatly tucked beneath a woolen blanket.
On a folding table sat half an empty carton of milk, a battery-powered radio, and a stack of spiral notebooks.
Arthur approached the table as if approaching an unexploded bomb.
He shone the light across the notebooks.
Every single page was covered in identical handwriting—the same handwriting from the card pinned to Lily’s music box.
Dates, times, and surveillance notes.
*October 12: Arthur bought the ring.*
*November 4: Lily's fever broke at 3:00 AM.*
*December 14: Eleanor looked at the rose wall for forty minutes. She still doesn't remember.*
Arthur felt all the air leave his lungs.
This person hadn't just watched them after the fire; they had lived beneath their feet for months before Lily ever touched that hammer.
Beside the journals lay an opened envelope bearing the seal of a prestigious Manhattan genetic laboratory.
Arthur opened it with numb fingers.
Inside was a paternity test comparison.
The names listed on the first page made his vision blur with sheer disbelief.
Lily wasn't just Eleanor’s daughter.

The DNA profile of the biological father did not match Arthur at all.
It matched Julian Vance—Arthur’s older brother, who supposedly died in a private plane crash eight years ago.
