Chapter 12 - Daniel’s Realization Too Late

Late one autumn evening,
sitting alone in my study,
a small, sealed envelope was delivered
to my front desk.
No return address.
Just my name written in messy,
trembling handwriting.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of lined paper.
Margaret,
it began.
I know you'll never forgive me.
I don't expect you to.
Sitting here in this tiny motel room,
surrounded by nothing,
I finally understand what Claire was trying to tell me.
She loved me.
Truly,
unconditionally loved me.
And I traded that love
for vanity,
greed,
and a lie.
Vanessa left me the moment the money ran out.
She took whatever cash she could hide
and vanished without a word.
I am alone.
Completely,
terrifyingly alone.
I look at Claire’s photograph on my phone,
and all I feel is the cold weight
of my own betrayal.
I’m sorry.
Not because I lost everything,
but because I broke the only pure thing
I ever had.
Yours,
Daniel.
I folded the letter neatly.
Placed it back inside the envelope.
And tossed it into the fireplace.
Watching the flames consume the paper
until it turned to ash.
Remorse without redemption
is just regret for getting caught.

And for Daniel,
there was no road back.
