Chapter 1 - The Reading of the First Clause

To my husband, Daniel,
if you are hearing this
while seated beside Vanessa Cole,
then my last question has already been answered.
Vanessa went pale.
Daniel shot to his feet.
Stop.
And for the first time
since he had walked into my daughter’s funeral laughing,
Daniel looked afraid.
Elliot Hayes did not stop.
He raised his voice slightly.
Cutting through the shocked whispers
of the congregation.
He continued reading.
Claire left nothing to chance.
Every asset Daniel thought was his,
every share in the company,
every bank account,
was tied to a revocable trust.
A trust managed solely by me.
Margaret.
Daniel stared at Elliot.
His mouth opened.
No sound came out.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
Her fingernails digging in.
Whispering frantically.
What is he talking about?
Daniel shook her off.
He stepped forward.
Down the aisle.
Toward the lectern.
You can't do this,
he snarled.
This is a mistake.
Claire signed those papers under duress.
Elliot looked at him calmly.
Adjustment of glasses.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Mrs. Mercer was of sound mind,
Elliot said.
And her signature
was witnessed by three independent physicians
just forty-eight hours
before her passing.
The church was dead silent.
Pastor Reed folded his hands.
Watching the unraveling
of a man's greed.
Daniel turned his head.
His eyes locked onto mine.
Margaret,
he whispered,
his voice cracking.
You know this wasn't right.
Talk to him.
I looked back at him.
My face cold.
Impenetrable.
You called me Margaret,
I replied.
Not Mom.
Remember?
His face drained of all color.
May you like
He realized
the trap had snapped shut.
