Chapter 10 - The Public Humiliation at the Gala

Two weeks later,

the annual city charity gala was held

at the grand ballroom of the Omni Hotel.

An event Claire used to chair every single year.

I arrived wearing a custom midnight-blue gown,

walking with quiet elegance.

The entire room stood up and applauded

as I entered.

Recognizing the strength,

grace,

and resilience I had shown

through the darkest tragedy of my life.

Vanessa had tried to sneak into the gala,

hoping to beg forgiveness from influential donors

or find a new benefactor.

She wore a cheap imitation red dress,

trying desperately to reclaim her former glory.

As she walked toward the buffet table,

the room grew noticeably quiet.

Whispers rippled through the crowd.

Look,

isn't that Vanessa Cole?

The woman from the funeral?

What is she even doing here?

Security guards immediately approached her,

flanking her on both sides.

Excuse me,

ma'am,

the head guard said loudly,

ensuring everyone could hear.

You are not on the guest list.

In fact,

you are permanently barred

from all charitable events

associated with the Mercer Foundation.

Vanessa's face burned bright red.

She tried to protest.

I have friends here!

I belong in this room!

No one looked at her.

No one stepped forward to help her.

She was escorted out the grand double doors

in front of three hundred elite members of society.

Humiliated.

Rejected.

Utterly destroyed.

I watched from across the room,

May you like

raising my champagne glass in a silent toast

to justice and memory.
