Chapter 20 - The Unopened Black Envelope

By three in the morning, the police cruisers had cleared the driveway, taking Julian Vance away into the permanent custody of the federal remand center.
A restoration crew had cleaned the foyer, neutralized the fuel fumes, and repaired the shattered conservatory doors.
The emergency generator was back online, casting a warm, golden glow through the private study on the second floor.
Margaret sat behind Thomas’s massive mahogany desk, her hands folded neatly over the polished leather blotter.
Across from her, Arthur Campbell sat in the leather wing chair, looking older than his seventy-two years.
Between them on the desk lay a thick, heavy black envelope, sealed with black wax stamped with an insignia Margaret had never seen before: an anchor wrapped in thorns.
"Julian didn't find those ledger pages by accident, Margaret," Arthur said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"He was fed those files by someone who has been waiting thirty years for Thomas to die."
Margaret looked down at the black envelope, feeling a cold chill run along the base of her neck.
"Who, Arthur?" Margaret asked, her voice steady, but her eyes sharp with foreboding.
"In 1994, before you and Thomas took full control of the shipping lines from the old board," Arthur explained, looking down at his clasped hands, "there was a partner."
"A partner named Evelyn Cross."
Margaret’s breath caught in her throat.
The name hit her like an physical blow across the chest.
"Evelyn Cross died in a shipyard explosion in Boston thirty years ago," Margaret said, her voice dropping into an icy whisper.
"Thomas identified the remains himself."
Arthur slowly shook his head, looking up into Margaret’s eyes with profound sorrow and terror.
"Thomas lied to you, Margaret."
"To protect you."
"To protect Claire."
"Evelyn didn't die that night."
"She took sixty million dollars in bearer bonds and vanished into the European shipping cartels."
"And the man who bankrolled Marcus and Julian Vance's takeover attempt... the person who bought up eighteen million dollars of Julian's predatory debt..."
Arthur reached out with a trembling finger and pushed the black envelope across the mahogany desk until it touched Margaret’s hand.
"Julian didn't invent that attack on your dynasty, Margaret."
"He was just the pawn."
"Evelyn Cross has returned to New York."
"And inside that envelope is a demand for fifty-one percent of the Sterling empire..."

"Or she releases the sealed maritime records that will prove Claire was never Thomas's daughter."
Margaret froze, her hand resting on the cold wax seal, the clock on the mantle ticking mercilessly into the silence of the night.
