Chapter 15 - The Matriarch's Retaliation

The principal’s office at Saint Jude’s Academy was suffocatingly quiet when Margaret and Claire walked through the heavy double oak doors.

Headmistress Vance-Lowell sat behind her mahogany desk, visibly flustered and sweating beneath her tweed jacket.

Julian Vance sat in an armchair near the window, dressed in a brand-new Italian wool coat, a smirking arrogance plastered across his sharp features.

Beside him stood two men holding state welfare badges, looking distinctly uncomfortable.

In the small adjoining conference room, Lily and Owen could be seen through the glass, sitting quietly, coloring pictures under the watchful eye of a school counselor.

The moment Claire entered, Owen looked up, his little face lighting up with relief.

"Claire," Julian said, standing up with an exaggerated sigh of theatrical sympathy.

"I didn't want it to come to this, really."

"But given the federal fraud indictments hanging over your mother and the imminent freezing of all Sterling residential properties, this is no longer a safe environment for my children."

"Your children?" Margaret spoke, stepping past Claire, her voice low, measured, and terrifyingly calm.

Julian’s smirk twitched for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered his swagger.

"Margaret, you have no legal standing here," Julian scoffed.

"I am their biological father."

"And you are about to be indicted for forty counts of maritime fraud and corporate embezzlement."

"Is that what you told these gentlemen from the child welfare agency, Julian?" Margaret asked, turning her icy gaze upon the two caseworkers.

The older caseworker cleared his throat, shifting his weight.

"Mrs. Sterling, Mr. Vance presented an emergency affidavit stating that the children are at risk of homelessness and corporate asset seizure within forty-eight hours."

"Did he also present you with this?" Arthur Campbell stepped through the doorway, holding a thick leather folder tied with gold ribbon.

He tossed the folder directly onto the headmistress’s desk, where it slid to a halt right in front of Julian.

"What is that?" Julian asked, his voice tightening.

"That is the sealed prenuptial codicil signed by you in Switzerland six years ago," Arthur announced, his voice ringing through the office like a church bell.

"A codicil that explicitly states that any spouse who engages in extortion, corporate sabotage, or financial fraud against the Sterling family automatically forfeits all legal, physical, and custodial rights to any issue of the marriage."

Julian let out a shrill laugh.

"That agreement was signed under duress! Any judge will throw it out in five seconds!"

"Perhaps," Margaret said, taking a slow step toward Julian until she was standing less than two feet from his face.

"If it were only the custody codicil, Julian."

"But while you were busy stealing Thomas’s Mediterranean salvage logs from the cellar safe, you failed to read the bottom three pages of that ledger."

Julian’s smile froze completely.

The color began to drain from his face, leaving his skin the shade of wet parchment.

"What... what are you talking about?" Julian stammered.

"Thomas knew you were stealing from the offshore accounts three months before he passed away, Julian," Margaret whispered, every word landing like a hammer blow.

"The ledger you handed to Harrison Cole and the federal prosecutor isn't an indictment against Thomas Sterling."

"It is an exhaustive, audited paper trail of the eight million dollars you embezzled through shell companies in Cyprus to pay off your brother Marcus’s illegal gambling syndicates."

"You didn't hand the federal authorities a weapon against me, Julian."

"You just handed them your own confession."
