Chapter 17 - The Midnight Intruder

By ten o'clock that evening, a ferocious blizzard had descended upon the valley, burying the roads under twelve inches of drifting snow.

The gates of Sterling Manor were locked, the high security perimeter armed with infrared motion sensors.

Inside the warm, firelit walls, Lily and Owen were sound asleep in their beds on the second floor, exhausted from the afternoon's emotional upheaval.

Claire sat curled up on the sofa in the morning parlor, drinking chamomile tea, watching the snow lash against the tall glass panes.

"It’s over, isn't it, Mom?" Claire asked softly as Margaret entered the room carrying a silver tray with fresh porcelain cups.

"Julian is facing twenty years in federal prison."

"The warrants have been issued."

Margaret paused, setting the tray down upon the low table.

Her eyes drifted toward the dark window, watching the swirling white vortex of the blizzard outside.

"A wounded animal is at its most dangerous right before it dies, Claire," Margaret said, her voice heavy with intuitive dread.

"Marcus Vance is a coward who will run for the border."

"But Julian has lived his entire life convinced that he is entitled to the Sterling dynasty."

"When men like Julian lose their illusions, they do not go quietly into the dark."

Suddenly, the crystal chandelier above their heads flickered twice.

Then, with a dull, heavy thud from the basement circuit breaker, every light in Sterling Manor went completely black.

The emergency backup generator hummed for three brief seconds, sputtered, and died with a sickening hiss of cut fuel lines.

The house was plunged into freezing, pitch-black silence, save for the howling gale beating against the glass.

Claire gasped, standing up instantly, spilling her tea onto the rug.

"Mom... the power grid has independent fail-safes."

"Someone cut the main line at the generator shed," Margaret stated, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.

Far down the hallway, the heavy sound of shattering glass echoed from the conservatory.

Footsteps followed.

Heavy, erratic, snow-caked boots crunching over shards of broken glass.

"The children," Claire whispered, absolute terror seizing her heart.

"Stay behind me," Margaret whispered, reaching into the pocket of her wool cardigan and pulling out the small, brass key to Thomas’s private study desk.

Margaret did not panic.

She moved through the darkness of her home with the flawless familiarity of someone who had walked these floorboards for forty years.

She guided Claire silently toward the master stairway, her heart pounding with cold, lethal resolve.

Down below, in the pitch-black foyer beneath the grand crystal chandelier, a voice rose from the shadows.

A voice hoarse, broken, dripping with madness and wet with snow.

"Margaret!" Julian screamed into the empty darkness of the manor.
