Chapter 5 - The Sheriff At The Gates And The Delivery Of The Eviction Notice

While Preston was enduring his public disgrace at the Rosewood bistro,

a silver Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department cruiser pulled up the long private driveway of the Palo Alto mansion.

Deputy Sheriff Marcus Vance,

a towering veteran officer with a stern expression,

stepped out into the crisp morning air.

Beside him walked a senior process server carrying a heavy metal clipboard filled with court-ordered eviction and restraining documents.

Marissa,

having abandoned Preston at the bistro after the credit card disaster,

had frantically returned to the mansion to pack her designer bags.

She was currently standing in the grand foyer holding three Gucci luggage cases when the loud,

authoritative pounding echoed against the oak front door.

Bang.

Bang.

Bang.

"Open the door,

Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department!" Deputy Vance’s deep voice boomed through the reinforced smart-glass windows.

Marissa dropped one of her bags in sheer terror,

her eyes darting frantically toward the security cameras mounted in the corners of the ceiling.

"Hello?" Marissa called out timidly,

her voice trembling.

"I am alone here; Preston is not currently on the premises!"

"Ma'am,

we have a court-ordered writ of possession,

immediate eviction notice,

and mutual restraining order signed by Judge Sterling,

" the deputy announced clearly.

"You have exactly ten minutes to gather your personal belongings and vacate the property before you are charged with criminal trespassing.

"

Panic surged through Marissa as she realized her dream of luxury had collapsed into a nightmare within twelve hours of stepping foot inside the mansion.

She sprinted upstairs to the master bedroom,

throwing clothes into her suitcases with frantic,

uncoordinated movements.

Downstairs,

the smart-home system recognized the legal credentials presented by the Sheriff’s department and automatically unlocked the front entrance.

The heavy oak door swung open,

and two deputies stepped into the grand foyer,

their boots clicking sharply against the imported Italian marble.

"Where is Preston Vale?" Deputy Vance asked,

looking around the cavernous living room with professional suspicion.

"He is at the Rosewood,

" Marissa cried out,

stumbling down the floating staircase with her arms overflowing with designer coats and shoe boxes.

"He told me everything belonged to us,

but he lied,

he lied about everything!"

"That much is abundantly clear,

Ms.

Lane,

" the deputy replied coldly,

handing her a formal copy of the restraining order.

"You are legally prohibited from contacting Eliza Vance or approaching within five hundred feet of any Ironvale Systems facility.

"

Marissa burst into desperate tears,

dragging her expensive luggage out the front door and down the long driveway toward the public street.

There was no private limousine waiting for her,

no admiring crowd of paparazzi,

and no billionaire husband to rescue her vanity.

She stood on the sidewalk under the harsh morning sun,

desperately trying to flag down a rideshare while clutching her designer bags in humiliation.

Back inside the mansion,

Deputy Vance placed an official notice of seizure on the kitchen island,

marking the formal return of the property to its rightful owner.

My security tablet buzzed with a notification confirming that the premises had been successfully cleared of unauthorized occupants.

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window of my hotel suite,

looking out across the valley toward the home I had built with my own hands.

The intruders were gone.

The sanctuary was restored.

And the legal reckoning was only just beginning to pick up speed.
