Chapter 10 - The Sterile Conference Room And The Confrontation Of Cowardice

At 4:00 PM,
the heavy glass door of the downtown San Jose conference room pushed open,
and I walked inside escorted by Arthur Vance.
I wore a tailored midnight-blue pantsuit,
my posture composed,
my expression impassive,
carrying the quiet authority of a sovereign queen entering a conquered province.
Preston looked up from the mahogany table,
his eyes bloodshot,
his skin pale,
wearing the crumpled suit he had worn since Friday night.
The contrast between us was absolute—he was a man reduced to raw desperation; I was a woman standing at the absolute zenith of my power.
"Liza,
" Preston croaked out,
his voice cracking as he stood up hesitantly,
reaching out a trembling hand toward me.
"Please.
you have to listen to me; it was all a terrible misunderstanding driven by outside pressures!"
I did not take his hand.
I stopped two paces away from him,
my gaze piercing straight through his desperate facade with chilling clarity.
"Sit down,
Preston,
" I said quietly,
the coolness of my tone freezing him in place.
He dropped back into his chair,
swallowing hard as he tried to assemble some shred of emotional manipulation.
"We built this life together,
Liza,
" he pleaded,
his eyes glistening with manufactured tears.
"Twelve years of marriage.
you cannot throw all of that away over a moment of weakness and a silly corporate dispute.
"
I walked slowly around the conference table,
letting the silence stretch between us like a physical weight before I finally spoke.
"You call twelve years of systematic deception a moment of weakness?" I asked,
my voice dangerously calm.
"You called my company 'ours' while quietly copying source code to sell to a Chinese-backed shell company behind my back.
"
Preston flinched,
opening his mouth to deny the accusation,
but I raised my hand to stop him instantly.
"Don't insult my intelligence any further,
Preston,
or I will instruct federal prosecutors to add perjury and obstruction to your indictment charges.
"
He slumped forward,
resting his forehead against his folded hands as his last remaining defense mechanism shattered completely.
"Marissa told them everything,
didn't she?" he whispered bitterly.
"Marissa told federal investigators everything because loyalty among thieves was never part of her programming,
" I replied evenly.
"Just as loyalty was never part of yours.
"
"What happens to me now,
Liza?" he asked,
his voice barely audible above the hum of the overhead ventilation system.
"What happens to me?"
"You face the legal consequences of your own architecture,
" I answered,
turning toward the door with absolute finality.
"Your trial begins in three months,
and your access to my world is permanently terminated.
"
I paused at the threshold,
looking back at the man who had tried to consume my empire from within.
"Goodbye,
Preston,
" I said softly.
May you like
"Enjoy the silence.
