Chapter 4 - The Frozen Black Cards And The Public Humiliation At The Bistro

Unaware of the full judicial catastrophe unfolding behind the scenes,

Preston decided that a lavish breakfast at the Rosewood’s exclusive garden bistro would restore his composure.

He dressed in his finest Tom Ford suit,

styling his hair with meticulous care while assuring Marissa that everything was merely a temporary banking glitch.

"Silicon Valley banks update their servers every weekend,

" Preston explained with practiced arrogance as they walked down the grand staircase.

"We will have breakfast,

sip mimosas,

and I will have my private wealth manager sort out the system error before noon.

"

Marissa smiled,

her confidence instantly restored at the prospect of being seen dining among tech elite and venture capitalists.

They strolled into the sunlit garden bistro like royalty inspecting their personal estate,

drawing curious glances from executives sipping coffee nearby.

Preston seated Marissa at the premier corner table overlooking the valley,

signaling the head waiter with a condescending snap of his fingers.

"Bring us your finest vintage champagne,

a caviar platter,

and the artisan truffle omelets,

" Preston ordered without even looking at the menu.

The waiter,

a seasoned professional named Julian who had served Silicon Valley founders for over a decade,

nodded politely.

"Certainly,

Mr.

Vale,

" Julian replied with a tight,

knowing smile that Preston completely misinterpreted as deference.

They spent forty leisurely minutes laughing,

drinking,

and discussing which luxury European resort they would charter a private jet to visit next week.

When Julian returned with the silver tray bearing the bill,

Preston tossed his titanium black card onto the leather folder with theatrical flair.

"Charge it to my primary corporate portfolio,

Julian,

" Preston instructed casually,

taking another sip of champagne.

Julian bowed slightly,

took the card,

and walked discreetly to the portable wireless terminal stationed near the host podium.

Two minutes passed.

Then five minutes.

Julian reappeared at the table,

his expression rigid and professional,

holding the black card between two fingers as if it were contaminated.

"I am terribly sorry,

Mr.

Vale,

" Julian said smoothly,

loud enough for neighboring tables to overhear.

"Your issuing bank returned an immediate authorization refusal code indicating total account suspension and asset freeze.

"

Preston’s face flushed a violent shade of crimson as he stood up abruptly from his chair,

knocking his cloth napkin to the floor.

"That is completely absurd,

" Preston snapped,

his voice rising in volume and pitch.

"I am a principal executive at Ironvale Systems and a co-owner of this estate; run the card through the secondary manual clearinghouse right now!"

Julian did not flinch,

maintaining his immaculate composure while speaking with absolute clarity.

"I attempted three separate merchant gateways,

sir,

" Julian replied evenly.

"All transactions have been categorically declined by order of the Santa Clara County Superior Court.

"

The whispering among surrounding tables intensified instantly as heads turned to stare at the disgraced executive standing in the sunlight.

Marissa shrank back into her seat,

her face draining of color as she realized the golden goose had just been slaughtered in public view.

"Preston,

" Marissa hissed quietly,

grabbing his sleeve with trembling fingers.

"What is going on here?"

Preston stammered incoherently,

fumbling through his pockets for another card while realizing every single plastic rectangle in his wallet was completely useless.

"It is a clerical error,

" Preston lied desperately to the surrounding crowd,

his voice cracking with humiliation.

"I will settle this immediately through my attorneys.

"

"I am afraid you will need more than attorneys to settle this breakfast,

sir,

" Julian said quietly,

placing the rejected black card on the table.

"Management requires immediate cash payment or another valid financial instrument.

"

Preston stood there in his thousand-dollar suit,

utterly penniless,

trapped in the epicenter of the community he had spent years trying to impress.

I watched the entire scene unfold on my tablet from my private suite upstairs,

sipping my coffee without a single shred of sympathy.

May you like

Public humiliation was a harsh teacher,

but Preston was a notoriously slow learner.
