Chapter 5 - The Resurrection of the Wolf

Julian moved toward me,
his hand reaching for the phone on the desk to call security.
"You’ve been a loyal servant,"
he said,
his voice dripping with false sympathy.
"But I’m afraid you’ve become hysterical."
"Attacking a doctor?"
"That’s a long sentence in a very dark place."
"He tried to kill me!"
I shouted,
backing toward the door,
holding the evidence high.
"I have the real pills!"
"I have the receipt for the fake labels!"
Julian laughed,
a dry,
hollow sound.
"Who will believe you?"
"You're a maid with a record of poverty."
"I am the CEO of Atlantic Harbor."
"My word is law."
"But mine isn't,"
a voice rasped from the chair.
Julian froze.
I froze.
Victor Russo slowly raised his head from the desk.
He didn't look sick.
He didn't look tired.
He looked like a man who had just crawled out of a grave and was looking for the man who put him there.
He sat up straight,
his eyes burning with a terrifying intensity.
In his hand,
he wasn't holding a pen.
He was holding a small,
discreet recording device.
"You always were too arrogant, Julian,"
Victor said,
his voice coming back with full power.
"You thought because I was slow, I was blind."
"I haven't taken a single pill you gave me for the last forty-eight hours."
"I've been spitting them into the fireplace."
Julian’s face went from pale to ghostly white.
"Victor... I... I was doing this for the company..."
"You were doing this for yourself,"
Victor growled,
standing up.
He was a tall man,
and in that moment,
he seemed to fill the entire room.
"I knew someone was tampering with my head."
"I just didn't know who was holding the vial."
"Until today."
"Until the little girl who sees everything pointed out the one thing you missed."
He looked at me,
and for the first time,
I saw a flicker of genuine respect in his eyes.
"Elena, call my brother."
"Tell him to bring the 'cleanup' crew."
"And tell Emily..."
He paused,
looking at the crooked label on the bottle on the desk.
"...tell her she just earned a full scholarship to any school in the world."
"But Julian,"
Victor said,
turning back to the trembling executive.
"You and I are going to have a very long conversation about the price of treason."

The drama wasn't over.
It was just moving from the medicine cabinet to the boardroom.
