Chapter 11 - The Lombardy Ghost and the Architecture of Fear

The morning mist over Lake Como was a shroud of grey silk,
clinging to the ancient stone of the Russo villa like a secret that refused to be told.
We had arrived in Italy under the cover of a false flight plan,
landing at a private strip near Varese before being whisked away in armored Alfas.
I stood on the balcony of the guest suite,
the cold mountain air biting at my skin,
wrapped in a robe that cost more than a year of my former life’s wages.
Behind me,
Emily was playing with a set of hand-carved wooden blocks,
oblivious to the fact that we were in the heart of the lion’s den.
She was safe for now,
guarded by men with submachine guns hidden beneath Italian wool coats,
but the safety felt like a thin veneer of ice over a deep,
dark lake.
Victor entered the room without knocking,
his presence a sudden weight in the atmosphere.
He had traded his business suit for a dark sweater and slacks,
looking less like a CEO and more like the soldier he had been in his youth.
"The villa is secure,"
he said,
his voice low,
mirroring the gravity of the morning.
"Marco is in Milan,
tracking the movements of Sofia’s inner circle."
"But we have a problem,
Claire."
I winced at the name—
my real name—
the one I had tried to bury in the dirt of a forgotten past.
"I’m still Elena to the world,"
I reminded him,
turning to face him.
"If you call me Claire in front of the wrong person,
we’re both dead."
He walked to the balcony rail,
looking out at the water.
"Sofia knows you’re not a maid."
"The 'crooked label' wasn't just a mistake by a printer."
"It was a test."
"She wanted to see who in my household was sharp enough to notice the anomaly."
"She expected me to catch it,
or perhaps Dr. Pierce to report that I had noticed it."
"She didn't expect a seven-year-old girl and her mother to be the ones to dismantle a multi-million dollar assassination plot."
I felt a shiver that had nothing to do with the cold.
"So she knows I’m a threat?"
"She knows you’re an anomaly,"
Victor corrected.
"In Sofia’s world,
anomalies are either recruited or erased."
"She’s hosting a gala tomorrow night at the Palazzo Russo in the city."
"It’s for the 'International Relief Fund,'
which is really just a laundering front for the Meridian Syndicate’s European operations."
"I need you there."
"Not as a servant,"
"but as my partner."
"A forensic auditor with a grudge."
I looked at my hands—
the callouses from scrubbing floors were still there,
hidden under a fresh manicure.
"I don't have a dress for a gala,
Victor."
"And I don't have a weapon that can get past a metal detector."
Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out a small,
velvet box.
Inside was a necklace of black diamonds,
dark and cold and brilliant.
"The diamonds are industrial-grade,"
he said.
"The clasp is a high-frequency transmitter."
"And the woman wearing them,"
"is the most dangerous weapon in this room."
"You’re going to find her ledger,
Claire."
"You’re going to find the digital key to the Syndicate’s offshore holdings."
May you like
"And then,"
"we’re going to bankrupted my sister before she realizes the maid has entered the counting room."
