Chapter 18 - The Architect of the Meridian Abyss

The boardroom at Atlantic Harbor Holdings was silent as we entered.

The remaining directors sat like statues,

their eyes flicking between Victor and me.

They had heard the rumors—

the massacre in Milan,

the betrayal of Marco,

the rise of the maid.

Victor didn't take his usual seat at the head of the table.

He stood by the window,

looking out at the harbor,

where the massive container ships were being unloaded.

"For twenty years,"

he began,

his voice echoing in the glass chamber.

"This company has operated in the grey."

"We traded in shadows."

"We paid for peace."

"And in return,"

"we were infested by a parasite called the Meridian Syndicate."

"They thought they could own us by poisoning me."

"They thought they could control the future by killing a child."

He turned to face them,

his eyes burning with a cold,

righteous fire.

"They were wrong."

"Today,"

"Atlantic Harbor becomes a fortress."

"And the person who will hold the keys,"

"is Elena Vance."

A murmur of protest rose from the table,

but Victor silenced it with a single look.

"She has uncovered the source,"

he said.

"The man who funded Julian Vane."

"The man who gave the orders to Sofia."

I stepped forward and opened my laptop,

projecting a map onto the wall.

It wasn't a map of shipping routes.

It was a map of a digital ghost network.

"The Syndicate isn't a board of directors,"

I explained,

my finger tracing the lines of light.

"It’s an algorithm."

"A system of automated shell companies that buy and sell assets based on political instability."

"And the architect,"

"the man who wrote the code,"

"is someone you all know."

I clicked the next slide.

The face that appeared was not a criminal mastermind.

It was a man who had been dead for ten years.

Arthur Russo.

Victor’s father.

The room went deathly silent.

Victor’s face went pale,

the shock stripping away his composure.

"My father...

he built the Syndicate?"

"He didn't just build it,

Victor,"

I said,

the weight of the discovery pressing on my heart.

"He designed it to destroy the company if it ever went legitimate."

"It was a fail-safe."

"If you ever tried to leave the 'shadows,'"

"the algorithm would trigger a series of events to liquidate the family."

"The medicine,"

"the 'crooked labels'—"

"they were pre-programmed."

"Julian and Sofia were just the executors of a dead man’s will."

Victor collapsed into a chair,

the irony of his life’s work crashing down on him.

He had been fighting a ghost.

He had been trying to save an empire that was designed to consume him.

"So,"

Victor whispered.

"There is no Grandmaster to kill."

"There is no head of the snake."

"Only a machine,"

I said.

"And I’m the only one who knows how to hack it."

May you like

"But to do it,"

"I have to burn every dollar the Russo name has ever earned."
