Chapter 12 - The Audit of Blood and Gold

The Palazzo Russo was a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture,
a sprawling monument to a family whose wealth was built on the bones of the Mediterranean trade.
Chandeliers of Murano glass hung from gilded ceilings,
casting a warm,
deceptive glow over the sea of aristocrats and criminals who mingled on the marble floors.
I wore a dress of midnight blue silk,
the black diamonds heavy against my throat,
and a mask of confidence that I had to fight to keep in place.
Victor was at my side,
his hand firm on the small of my back,
guiding me through the crowd like a king returning to a rebellious province.
"Smile,
Elena,"
he whispered,
his breath warm against my ear.
"You’re the mystery woman from New York."
"The one everyone is dying to meet."
"Literally,"
I muttered back,
my eyes scanning the room for security cameras and exits.
We were approached by a woman who could only be Sofia Russo.
She was beautiful in a way that felt sharp,
like a shard of glass.
Her hair was a silver-blonde bob,
her dress a shimmering gold that made her look like a statue.
"Victor,"
she said,
stepping forward to kiss his cheeks with a theatrical affection that didn't reach her eyes.
"You look remarkably well."
"The rumors of your...
declining health...
must have been greatly exaggerated."
"I have an excellent support system,
Sofia,"
Victor replied,
his voice smooth as bourbon.
"Let me introduce you to my associate,
Elena Vance."
Sofia turned her gaze to me,
and I felt the weight of her scrutiny like a physical blow.
She didn't see a maid.
She saw a rival.
"Elena,"
Sofia said,
tasting the name.
"An unusual choice for you,
Victor."
"She doesn't look like the usual...
accommodations...
you keep."
"I value intelligence over aesthetics,
Sofia,"
Victor said.
"Though in Elena’s case,
I didn't have to choose."
Sofia laughed,
a sound like silver coins hitting a stone floor.
"Well,
I hope you enjoy the party."
"There are so many surprises in store tonight."
She drifted away,
leaving a trail of expensive perfume in her wake.
"She’s onto us,"
I whispered.
"She knows why I’m here."
"Then don't waste time,"
Victor said.
"The server room is behind the library on the third floor."
"You have twenty minutes before the guards rotate."
I slipped away from the crowd,
moving through the shadows of the palazzo with the stealth I had perfected while cleaning rooms I wasn't supposed to enter.
I found the library—
a cavernous room filled with the scent of old parchment and leather.
The hidden door was where Victor said it would be,
behind a false shelf of Latin law texts.
I entered the code into the keypad—
Victor’s mother’s birthday—
and the door hissed open.
Inside,
the air was cold and humming with the sound of servers.
I pulled a small flash drive from my clutch and plugged it into the main terminal.
The screen flickered to life,
columns of data streaming past my eyes.
My fingers flew across the keyboard,
reverting to the Claire Sterling who had once brought down a governor.
I saw the transfers.
I saw the names.
The Syndicate wasn't just a business rival.
They were a global parasite.
And then,
I saw a folder labeled 'PROJECT CROOKED LABEL.'
I opened it,
and my heart stopped.
It wasn't a plan to kill Victor.
It was a plan to replace him.
Not with Julian Vane.
Not with Sofia.
But with a puppet.
And the puppet’s identity was a blank space,
waiting for a final signature.
Suddenly,
the lights in the server room turned red.
"Access Denied,"
the screen flashed.
A voice boomed over the speakers,
cold and triumphant.
"Did you really think it would be that easy,
Claire?"
It wasn't Sofia’s voice.
It was Dr. Evan Pierce.
He wasn't in a basement in New York.
May you like
He was here.
And he was holding the kill switch.
