Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

The morning sun cast long, golden shadows across the wide pastures of Pine Creek.

Dozens of veterans continued to mill about the gravel driveway and sprawling lawn.

Coffee cups clinked softly as old comrades shared stories of past deployments and battles.

General Isaac Reed stood near the back of the black SUV with a satellite phone pressed to his ear.

His brow was furrowed deeply, etched with lines of mounting tension and serious concern.

Captain David Vance walked over to my wheelchair, carrying a thick binder filled with financial records.

"Colonel Hayes, the preliminary data from the seized server is already painting a very dark picture," Vance said.

"Blackwood Capital hasn't just been targeting veterans in our county alone."

"They have systematically acquired over four thousand acres of land across three neighboring states."

"Every single parcel belonged to retired military personnel or families of fallen service members."

I looked out over the green fields that my grandfather had cleared with his own hands.

"They are trying to push us out to build their private toll highway and logistics hub," I said coldly.

"Senator Sterling knows that rural veterans lack the massive legal funds to fight corporate conglomerates."

"He thought we would quietly pack our bags and leave without a single shot being fired."

"Instead, he ran directly into an infantry colonel who refuses to retreat," Vance added with a tight smile.

General Reed lowered the satellite phone and walked briskly toward us.

His expression was grim, carrying the weight of a commander receiving heavy enemy intelligence.

"That was the Director of Legislative Affairs in Washington," Reed announced quietly.

"Senator Sterling's office has already issued a formal press release denying any involvement."

"They claim that Blackwood Capital is an independent real estate investment firm."

"They are trying to paint our allegations as a politically motivated attack orchestrated by disgruntled military brass."

A collective murmur of indignation rippled through the veterans gathered nearby.

Old Sergeant Miller slammed his walking cane firmly against the hard-packed dirt.

"Politicians think they can lie their way out of anything with a press conference!" Miller shouted.

"We didn't bleed on foreign soil just to be robbed by men in expensive suits right here at home!"

"They underestimated our resolve," I said, wheeling myself forward to address the crowd.

"Senator Sterling thinks Washington is his personal kingdom where law doesn't apply."

"He forgot that soldiers know how to dig in, hold the line, and launch a counter-offensive."

"If he wants a war, we will give him a war he will never forget."
