Chapter 17 - The Whistleblower from Within

Before noon, a battered blue pickup truck turned down our gravel driveway and parked near the edge of the lawn.
A middle-aged man in a rumpled corporate suit stepped out, looking nervously over his shoulder.
He walked toward the porch with hesitant steps, holding a worn leather briefcase tightly against his chest.
Captain David Vance stepped forward, blocking his path until the man identified himself.
"I’m Arthur Pendelton," the man said, his voice trembling slightly. "Former chief financial officer for Vanguard Energy."
"I saw your broadcast on the Capitol steps, and I realized I couldn't be a part of their crimes anymore."
I gestured for him to come up the steps and offered him a seat at our command table.
"Take a breath, Mr. Pendelton, and tell us what you have brought to our table," I instructed calmly.
Pendelton unzipped his briefcase and pulled out three solid-state hard drives along with signed financial ledgers.
"These drives contain the unencrypted accounting books for every illegal land acquisition over the last five years," Pendelton revealed.
"They detail the exact bribe amounts paid to state legislators, regional judges, and regulatory commissioners."
"Including the names of the board members who ordered the intimidation campaigns against veterans?" General Reed asked sharply.
"Every single one of them," Pendelton answered, sliding the drives across the wooden table.
"Vanguard is planning a massive shareholder meeting in Chicago next week to vote on phase two of the project."
"They intend to fast-track the rezoning of four hundred thousand acres of veteran-owned land across the Midwest."
I looked at the hard drives, then out at the veterans working on the farm, and finally at my trusted comrades.
"They want to rush their corporate takeover before the federal task force can lock down their assets," I said.
"Then we don't have a moment to waste," Captain David Vance declared, standing up instantly.
"We take these drives directly to the Attorney General, and we broadcast the entire ledger to the national press."
May you like
"No," I corrected him with a sharp, tactical smile. "We take it one step further."
"We don't just hand the evidence to the press; we walk right through the front doors of Vanguard's headquarters in Chicago."
