Chapter 18 - The Convoy to Chicago

Two days later, a massive convoy of veteran transport vans and support vehicles rolled out of Pine Creek.

Over two hundred decorated veterans, legal experts, and civil rights advocates formed an unbreakable united front.

Our destination was the gleaming steel-and-glass monolith of Vanguard Energy's corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago.

When our convoy arrived at the skyscraper's private plaza, national news networks were already waiting live on the scene.

I transferred from my vehicle into my heavy steel wheelchair, flanked by General Reed, Captain Vance, and Agent Marcus Vance.

The towering glass doors of the lobby were locked tight by private security guards wearing heavy tactical vests.

They stood behind the reinforced glass, staring nervously at the sea of veterans filling the sunlit plaza.

I rolled my chair right up to the glass doors, stopping just inches from the transparent barrier.

I looked directly into the eyes of the lead security supervisor standing inside with a headset on.

"Tell your CEO that Colonel Lena Hayes and the National Veterans Alliance are here to deliver an audit," I said clearly.

The supervisor spoke frantically into his radio, his face pale under the lobby's bright recessed lighting.

A moment later, the sleek elevator doors at the end of the grand lobby chimed softly.

Out stepped Vanguard's Chief Executive Officer, Julian Vance—no relation to David or Marcus—wearing an expensive bespoke suit.

He walked slowly toward the glass doors, wearing a cold, arrogant smile that reached none of his eyes.

Julian pressed the intercom button, and his voice echoed faintly through the outdoor speaker system.

"You are trespassing on private corporate property, Colonel," Julian sneered from behind the glass.

"You cannot simply march into a Fortune 500 headquarters and demand an audience."

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out the solid-state drives provided by Arthur Pendelton.

I held the cryptographic drives up against the glass so every camera lens could capture them clearly.

"We aren't here to ask for an audience, Julian," I replied, my voice ringing with absolute authority.

"We are here to return your stolen property, your bribery ledgers, and your fraudulent deeds."

"And to inform you that federal indictments are already being printed for every executive in this building."

Julian’s arrogant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a flash of genuine panic and fury.

He turned to signal his security guards, but before anyone could move, the revolving doors swung open.

Federal marshals, accompanied by heavily armed state troopers, strode past our ranks and into the lobby.

Agent Marcus Vance held up a massive federal search and seizure warrant signed by the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Julian Vanguard, you are under arrest for corporate racketeering, bribery, and federal fraud," Agent Vance announced.

The massive glass doors were unlocked from the inside as federal agents secured the perimeter.

The crowd of veterans on the plaza erupted into a powerful, earth-shaking cheer that echoed off the skyscrapers.
