Chapter 6 - The Crumbling Kingdom of Glass

The silence inside Dante’s Bellagio penthouse became a toxic swamp of suffocating regret.

Every marble surface, once gleaming with polished pride, now reflected the hollow wreck of a man who had conquered a city only to lose his ground.

For seventy-two hours, Dante did not sleep, remaining slumped in his leather armchair with a tumbler of bourbon dangling between his fingers.

Marco walked into the dimly lit study, carrying a stack of red-flagged financial default notices.

"Boss, the Gaming Commission held an emergency closed-door hearing this morning," Marco reported cautiously, keeping his head bowed.

"They rejected our petition for an interim operational waiver."

"The commissioners stated plainly that without the signature of the Bennett Trust’s primary trustee, the land beneath our three flagship casinos is officially in title dispute."

"The VIP suites have been shuttered by court order, and our European credit lines were frozen at midnight."

Dante did not lift his glass.

His bloodshot eyes remained fixed on the framed portrait of Claire that still hung above the cold fireplace.

"Did the private investigators find the jet?" Dante asked, his voice gravelly and cracked from exhaustion.

"The Swiss Gulfstream landed in Zurich at dawn two days ago," Marco whispered.

"By the time our local European contacts arrived at the private terminal, the aircraft was completely empty."

"Arthur Vance chartered three separate decoy helicopters leaving Zurich simultaneously toward Geneva, Vienna, and London."

"She didn't use her passport at any border control point."

"Claire slipped into Europe like a phantom, Boss."

A bitter, broken laugh rattled in Dante's throat.

He had spent ten years teaching Claire how the mafia moved through shadows, and she had turned his own underworld playbook against him with deadly precision.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the penthouse study burst open, shattering the cemetery silence.

Eleanor Bennett stormed into the room, pushing past the armed guards stationed outside.

Behind her trailed Lily, clutching three-day-old Isabella against her chest, looking terrified and fragile in an oversized sweater.

"Dante, you have to do something!" Eleanor shrieked, waving an eviction notice from the Spanish Trail homeowners association.

"The sheriff came to my front gate this morning!"

"Claire filed an expedited foreclosure through the trust lawyers!"

"They are locking me out of my own home in forty-eight hours because the estate mortgage hasn't been serviced!"

Dante slowly turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto Eleanor with a venomous disgust that made her freeze mid-sentence.

"Your home?" Dante sneered, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.

"Your home was purchased with Arthur Bennett’s blood and Claire’s trust fund."

"You traded your daughter’s marriage for a piece of my empire, Eleanor, and now the bill has arrived."

"Dante, please..." Lily sobbed softly, stepping forward as tears streamed down her pale cheeks.

"Don't speak to Mom like that."

"We did this for our family, for Isabella."

"You promised me we wouldn't have to hide anymore once the baby was born."

"You promised me that Claire would understand and that you would take care of us."

Dante looked at Lily, but the burning, forbidden desire that had once blinded him was entirely gone.

In its place remained only a horrifying, nauseating realization of what an ordinary, selfish child she truly was.

Without Claire’s quiet elegance framing their lives, Lily was just an insecure girl who had seduced her sister’s husband out of petty jealousy.

"Claire will never understand, Lily," Dante said, his voice void of warmth.

"Claire never begged, she never wept, and she never demanded anything from me."

"She simply stood by the hospital door, saw who we really were, and threw us into the garbage where we belong."

"Dante, how can you say that?!" Lily cried, holding the infant tighter as Isabella began to wail.

"Isabella is your daughter!"

"Look at her face!"

"She has your eyes!"

"Take her to the nursery," Dante ordered Marco coldly, turning his back on them both.

"Dante!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking with pure greed and desperation.

"Give us the access codes to the offshore liquidity accounts!"

"We need living expenses!"

"We need private security!"

"There are no offshore accounts left for you," Dante said, slamming his empty bourbon glass onto the desk until the crystal shattered into jagged shards.

"Every offshore dollar was tied to the collateral accounts that Claire legally seized when she dissolved our marriage."

"Arthur Vance has trapped me in a legal stranglehold."

"If I touch a single dollar of the casino's operating cash, the federal prosecutors will indict me for money laundering."

"You two wanted the great Dante Moretti?"

"Here I am."

"A king without a kingdom, chained to a desk by the woman I was too stupid to value."

"Get out of my sight before I have my men throw you into the street with the rest of the trash."

Eleanor stared at him in horror, grasping Lily’s trembling arm and pulling her out of the room.

As the doors closed behind their hysterical cries, Dante pressed his face into his hands.

May you like

The house was cavernous, cold, and utterly desolate.

Claire was gone, and with her went the only peace, the only honor, and the only salvation he had ever possessed.
