Chapter 4 - The Great Disappearance

By 7:30 AM, the private terminal at McCarran International Airport was shrouded in a thin veil of desert dawn mist.

Arthur Vance stood beside the boarding stairs of a Gulfstream G650 chartered through a private Swiss corporate entity.

In his hand, he held a leather courier portfolio containing twelve finalized legal filings stamped with red wax seals from the Nevada Secretary of State.

"The wire transfers cleared twelve minutes ago, Claire," Arthur said, handing me the receipt ledger.

"Every single penny of the Bennett trust accounts—eighty-six million dollars in cash reserves—is currently sitting in Credit Suisse in Zurich."

"The land rights to the strip parcels have been assigned to an offshore holding company named Nirvana Trust, registered under your sole maiden signature."

"And Dante?" I asked, looking through the tinted window of the terminal toward the distant skyline where the golden towers of Dante’s casinos caught the morning sun.

"Dante is currently sleeping in your penthouse, assuming you are on a Delta commercial flight to Rome," Arthur smirked.

"At 9:00 AM sharp, my senior process server will deliver the formal summons to Dante’s executive office at the Bellagio."

"The envelope contains three documents: the petition for irreconcilable dissolution of marriage, the asset freeze on his commercial development accounts, and a high-resolution photograph of room 412 at Sunrise Medical Center."

"The caption on the photograph reads: Congratulations on Isabella, Mr. Moretti."

A cold, sharp thrill ran through my veins, but my face remained an unreadable mask.

"What will he do when he sees it, Arthur?"

"He will lose his mind," Arthur replied grimly.

"Dante Moretti has spent ten years building a reputation as an untouchable mastermind who sees every move five turns ahead."

"You just dismantled his empire, took your father’s land out from under his feet, and exposed his filthiest secret without raising your voice."

"He will try to find you."

"He will tear Europe apart looking for you."

"He won't find me," I replied, taking the portfolio and stepping onto the metal stairs of the jet.

"Because Claire Moretti is dead."

"From this moment forward, I am only Claire Bennett."

As the aircraft engines roared to life, my phone rang.

The caller ID flashed Eleanor Bennett.

My mother had finally realized that my bedroom was empty, or perhaps Dante had called her to ask if she knew about my "art seminar."

I swiped the screen to answer, placing the phone to my ear without saying a word.

"Claire!" Eleanor’s voice was breathless, filled with frantic, saccharine anxiety.

"Where are you, darling? Dante called me in a panic saying you packed three bags and left in the middle of the night!"

"Lily was crying this morning because you didn't answer her texts from the hospital."

"You know how delicate your sister's nervous system is right now!"

"Why did you leave town without visiting your niece?"

I listened to the sound of my mother's deceitful breath, feeling a profound, clean emptiness settle over my heart.

"Eleanor," I spoke, my voice ringing clear and crystal cold across the connection.

The line fell dead silent at my tone; I had never once called her by her first name in my entire life.

"Claire... why are you calling me by my name?" she stammered, her voice shaking.

"Listen to me very carefully, because this is the last time you will ever hear my voice," I said.

"I saw Dante holding Isabella in room 412."

"I heard you tell him that the baby recognized her daddy's voice."

"And I read your text messages on the quartz island in your kitchen."

A sharp gasp sucked the air out of Eleanor's throat, followed by the sound of something glass shattering against the floor on her end of the line.

"Claire... no... oh God, Claire, please, listen to me!" Eleanor began to sob hysterically.

"It wasn't what it looks like! Dante was lonely while you were distant! Lily was so young and impressionable!"

"We had to protect the family name! If the syndicate found out—"

"You didn't protect the family, Eleanor," I interrupted, cutting through her panic like a scythe.

"You traded me for Dante Moretti's money."

"Now, you can keep him."

"Keep him, his baby, and Lily."

"Because as of this morning, the Bennett trust has revoked your monthly living stipend, the mortgage on your Spanish Trail house has been recalled, and Dante no longer owns the land beneath his casinos."

"Tell Dante that his wife didn't make a scene."

"His wife simply evicted him from her life."

I hung up the phone, popped the SIM card out of the tray, snapped the gold microchip in half between my fingers, and dropped it into a plastic cup of ice water.

The Gulfstream lifted off the runway, banking hard to the east as the desert mountains and the glittering mirage of Las Vegas shrank into insignificant specks of dust beneath the clouds.

May you like

I closed my eyes and leaned back against the leather seat.

I did not shed a single tear.
