Chapter 14 - The Unraveling of Eleanor and Lily

The scorching noon sun beat down mercilessly upon the asphalt of a cheap motel parking lot on the outskirts of North Las Vegas.

Eleanor Bennett sat on the sagging mattress of room 114, staring blankly at a plastic basin filled with lukewarm tap water.

Her Spanish Trail mansion was gone, seized and auctioned by the bankruptcy court to satisfy Arthur Vance's trust recovery judgments.

Her jewelry had been sold to pawnshops along Boulder Highway to pay for outstanding credit card debts Dante had abandoned.

The woman who had once hosted charity galas for Las Vegas high society now wore a faded cotton blouse bought at a discount store, her hands trembling with the onset of age and humiliation.

A knock sounded at the flimsy hollow-core door.

Eleanor scrambled to her feet, opening the latch with desperate hope, expecting an attorney or a courier with a settlement check.

Instead, Lily stood outside, carrying two-year-old Isabella on her hip, two battered duffel bags resting at her feet.

Lily's once-glamorous blonde hair hung limp and unwashed, her eyes sunken with chronic sleeplessness.

"Mom, the landlord locked me out of the Summerlin condo," Lily cried, pushing past Eleanor into the suffocating room.

"Dante's lawyers filed an emergency abandonment notice."

"Every car leased under the Moretti corporate name was repossessed this morning."

"We have no money left, Mom."

"Not a single dollar."

"Why did you let me do this?!" Lily suddenly screamed, dropping Isabella onto the unmade bed and turning on her mother like a cornered animal.

"You told me Dante would divorce Claire and marry me properly!"

"You told me Dante had more money than Dad ever made!"

"You were the one who convinced me to keep Isabella so Dante would be tied to us forever!"

"Don't you dare blame me, you ungrateful little wretch!" Eleanor shrieked back, lunging forward with her hand raised, slapping Lily across the cheek.

"You were the one who climbed into his sports car every weekend while Claire was out of town!"

"You wanted her life!"

"You wanted her clothes, her penthouse, and her status!"

"You were jealous of your sister from the day she was born, and your greed destroyed all of us!"

Lily clutched her stinging cheek, falling back against the wall, weeping in ragged, suffocating gasps while little Isabella cried in terror on the bed.

Across the city, inside the presidential suite of the Wynn, Arthur Vance knocked gently on the double doors of Claire’s living quarters.

Claire was sitting on the terrace overlooking the strip, sipping mint tea while watching Julian push baby Arthur on a wooden rocking horse.

"Come in, Arthur," Claire said, gesturing to the chair across from her.

Arthur placed a blue legal folder on the glass table.

"The Moretti syndicate is entirely liquidated, Claire," Arthur reported with professional precision.

"Dante pled guilty this morning to federal racketeering charges."

"He was sentenced to fourteen years at the federal correctional complex in Terre Haute, Indiana, with no possibility of parole for ten years."

"And my mother and sister?" Claire asked, her tone even and calm.

"They are currently residing in a low-rent motel on North Rancho Drive," Arthur replied.

"Lily attempted to file an emergency palimony suit against the Moretti trust, but since Dante had zero lawful individual equity left, the judge dismissed the filing with prejudice."

"They are completely destitute, Claire."

"Eleanor attempted to contact my office five times yesterday, begging for an audience with you."

"She claimed she would accept any monthly allowance you deemed fit to offer."

Claire looked down at the folder, then looked out over the glittering city below.

"Arthur, draft an irrevocable private trust fund," Claire said after a long moment of silence.

Arthur raised an eyebrow, surprised.

"For Eleanor and Lily?"

"No," Claire replied, her voice firm and decisive.

"For Isabella."

"Deposit five hundred thousand dollars into a restricted educational escrow account managed solely by neutral Swiss fiduciaries."

"The money will pay directly for Isabella's private school tuition, healthcare, and university costs when she comes of age."

"Neither Lily nor Eleanor shall ever have access to a single cent of that principal."

"If Lily attempts to withdraw cash or contest the terms, the entire fund will be redirected to an orphanage charity."

"And for Lily and Eleanor themselves?" Arthur inquired.

"Not one penny," Claire answered without hesitation.

"They made their beds in deceit, Arthur."

"Let them sleep in the poverty of their choices."

"They wanted to live without Claire Bennett."

"Now they will experience what that truly means for the rest of their lives."
