Chapter 7 - The Desperate Gambit

While Dorian lay broken in the ruins of his former office, Vivian Lacroix was operating on pure, unadulterated venom.

Stripped of her family’s wealth, evicted from her ancestral home, and cast out by her father, Vivian had retreated to a cheap motel room on the edge of the industrial district.

The neon sign outside the cracked window flickered with a depressing buzz: "Vacancy."

Vivian sat on the edge of the stained mattress, her laptop open on a wobbly wooden desk.

Her face was gaunt, her eyes manic and bloodshot.

"If I am going down, I am not going down alone," Vivian snarled through gritted teeth.

She had spent the last twenty-four hours compiling every photograph she had ever taken during her visits to Dorian’s mansion.

She had pictures of high-end jewelry, private safes, and confidential corporate memos.

More dangerously, Vivian had hired an underground digital hacker to forge financial trails linking Serafina Valenti to international money-laundering cartels.

Vivian’s plan was as simple as it was reckless.

She intended to leak the forged dossier to the major news networks and social media platforms simultaneously.

In the modern world, a public scandal could destroy reputations before the truth could ever catch up.

"Let's see the great Valenti matriarch survive the federal department of justice," Vivian muttered, her fingers clacking furiously across the keyboard.

"Let's see high society bow to a criminal under federal indictment."

She uploaded the first batch of documents to an anonymous drop server connected to the city’s largest investigative journalism network.

She drafted a viral social media post, attaching fabricated bank transfers that purported to show Serafina funneling millions of illicit syndicate funds into offshore accounts.

Her finger hovered over the blue "Publish" button.

"Goodbye, Serafina," Vivian whispered with a psychotic grin.

She pressed the button.

The laptop screen instantly went pitch black.

Vivian froze, blinking at the darkened monitor.

"What?" she muttered, tapping the trackpad frantically.

"No, no, no! Work, you piece of garbage!"

The screen flickered back to life, but it did not display her files.

Instead, a solid crimson background appeared, displaying a single line of stark white text:

"SIGNAL INTERCEPTED."

Before Vivian could even stand up, the door of the motel room imploded with a deafening crash.

Splintered wood flew across the room as four heavily armed operatives in tactical gear swarmed through the entrance.

"Hands on your head! Face on the floor! Now!" a voice barked with military precision.

Vivian shrieked, falling off the bed onto the dirty carpet, covering her head with her arms.

Within three seconds, her wrists were pinned behind her back and bound with heavy zip-ties.

A sleek pair of handmade leather boots walked into the room, stepping over the shattered fragments of the doorframe.

Julian Lacroix followed behind the boots, his face pale, his hands trembling violently.

"Father!" Vivian sobbed from the floor, looking up at him.

"Help me! These people broke in!"

Julian didn't look at her with paternal concern; he looked at her with pure terror and disgust.

"You idiot," Julian whispered, his voice trembling.

"You suicidal, arrogant idiot."

The owner of the leather boots stepped into the center of the dingy motel room.

It was Serafina.

She wore a tailored charcoal trench coat over a high-necked black silk dress.

She held a pair of black leather gloves in her hands, tapping them rhythmically against her palm.

"Did you really believe, Vivian," Serafina began, her voice calm and chillingly conversational, "that an encrypted network monitored by Valenti cybersecurity could be breached by a two-thousand-dollar motel hacker?"

Vivian glared up from the floor, her hatred overriding her fear.

"You can't touch me!" Vivian spat.

"The public will know what you are!"

"You're a mobster!"

"You're a criminal hiding behind old money!"

Serafina walked over to the desk and calmly closed the laptop with the tip of her index finger.

"The public knows only what power allows them to know, little girl," Serafina said softly.

"Your forged documents were intercepted eighteen seconds after you compiled them."

"The digital forensic trail points directly to your IP address, along with your search history detailing intent to commit corporate extortion, defamation, and federal wire fraud."

Serafina turned to Julian Lacroix.

"Julian," Serafina said without looking back.

"Yes, Lady Serafina," the older man responded immediately, bowing his head.

"Your daughter has proven to be an incurable liability to the stability of this city."

"What is your proposed solution?"

Julian closed his eyes, a single tear escaping down his weathered cheek.

He knew the rules of the old world.

If he did not offer a resolution that satisfied the Valenti house, his entire bloodline would be extinguished before the weekend.

"She will be placed on a private vessel tonight, Madam," Julian said, his voice choking with grief.

"She will be transported to our family's remote estate in northern Argentina."

"She will have no passport."

"She will have no internet access."

"She will have no phone lines."

"She will remain under the supervision of private guards for the rest of her natural life."

Vivian’s eyes widened in horror.

"No!" Vivian screamed, thrashing against the zip-ties on the floor.

"Father, no! You can't exile me!"

"Dorian! Dorian will help me!"

Serafina let out a short, quiet laugh that made Vivian's blood run cold.

"Dorian cannot even help himself buy a loaf of bread, Vivian," Serafina said, turning toward the door.

"He is currently sleeping on a bench in the transit station."

Serafina paused at the threshold of the broken doorway, looking back over her shoulder at the writhing girl on the floor.

"You wanted to take my place beside a powerful man," Serafina concluded.

"Now you will spend the rest of your days remembering what happens when you reach for a crown that was never yours to touch."

May you like

With a flick of Serafina's hand, the operatives hauled Vivian up by her arms and dragged her, screaming and thrashing, out into the rainy night.
