Chapter 6 - Secrets Dug from Marble

Midnight fell over the harbor, shrouding the docks in a thick, chilling blanket of sea fog.

Castellane Holdings was gone, but the physical building still stood, stripped of its corporate signage.

Dorian had used an old bypass code on the basement utility door to sneak inside the darkened tower.

He did not know what he was looking for.

Perhaps he was looking for some shred of dignity, some legal loophole, or some forgotten document that could prove he was not completely worthless.

His footsteps echoed hollowly across the stripped concrete of the forty-second floor.

The mahogany desks were gone.

The leather executive chairs were gone.

Only the cold industrial carpet remained, marked with indentations where his empire had once rested.

He walked into his former corner office, staring out the floor-to-ceiling glass at the glittering city lights below.

"Looking for your kingdom, Dorian?"

The voice came from the shadows near the executive boardroom door.

Dorian spun around, his heart pounding violently against his ribs.

Marcus Vance stepped out from the darkness, his hands tucked inside the pockets of a heavy charcoal trench coat.

Behind him stood two armed operatives, their faces obscured by the dim lighting.

"Marcus," Dorian breathed, backing up until his shoulder blades pressed against the cold window glass.

"Are you going to kill me?"

Marcus chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound that carried across the empty office.

"Kill you?" Marcus asked, walking slowly toward the center of the room.

"Lady Serafina does not waste bullets on ghosts."

"You are already dead, Dorian."

"You just haven't realized that your feet have stopped moving."

"Why did she do this to me?" Dorian cried out, the desperation tearing through his voice.

"I made a mistake!"

"I had an affair!"

"Men in this city have affairs every single day!"

"Their wives sue for alimony, they take half the savings, and life goes on!"

"Why did she have to destroy every single piece of my existence?"

Marcus stopped five paces away from Dorian.

He pulled a manila folder from his coat and dropped it onto the floor between them.

"Look inside," Marcus commanded.

Dorian hesitated, then dropped to his knees and opened the folder with shaking hands.

Inside were dozens of photographs, bank ledgers, and surveillance reports dated from six years ago.

Dorian’s eyes widened as he scanned the documents.

They were files regarding his very first corporate deal—the acquisition of the Northport Freight Fleet.

"You think your affair with that cheap Lacroix girl is why you were ruined?" Marcus asked, his tone dropping into deadly seriousness.

"Look at the dates, Dorian."

Dorian looked at the ledger.

The documents showed that six years ago, Dorian’s business partner, Thomas Sterling, had attempted to poison Dorian's reputation by framing him for tax evasion.

Thomas had planned to send Dorian to federal prison and seize control of the startup.

Beneath the report was a signed confession from Thomas, along with an agreement to surrender all his shares to Dorian for one dollar.

"Thomas Sterling didn't surrender to you because of your brilliant negotiation, Dorian," Marcus said quietly.

"He surrendered because I spent forty-eight hours in a basement with him."

"Lady Serafina ordered me to protect you."

"She didn't want your heart broken by the brutality of this industry."

Dorian flipped through the next set of papers.

There were surveillance photos of three rival mob bosses who had attempted to extort Dorian's warehouses during his second year of operation.

Each photo was stamped with a red file number: "Neutralized by Valenti Security."

"Every competitor who backed down, every regulator who looked the other way, every bank manager who approved your unsecured loans..." Marcus continued, circling the kneeling man like a hawk.

"They didn't do it because they feared Dorian Castellane."

"They did it because the shadow of the Valenti serpent was wrapped around your throat, protecting you from every monster in this city."

Dorian clutched the papers to his chest, tears streaming unchecked down his hollow cheeks.

"She... she protected me from everything," Dorian whispered, the crushing weight of reality finally breaking his spine.

"She shielded you like a mother shields a child," Marcus replied harshly.

"She took the filth, the violence, and the blood of this world so that you could play the role of the clean, honorable businessman."

"She wore cotton dresses and listened to your boring stories about profit margins."

"She ate the burned food you cooked for her on your anniversary and called it a masterpiece."

"She gave up the most powerful throne on the eastern seaboard just to give you the delusion that you were the king."

Marcus stepped closer, looking down at the broken man on the floor.

"And when you achieved the very success she bought with her silence, you looked at her and said she was too small for your world."

Dorian buried his face in the carpet, his body shaking with uncontrollable sobs.

"I didn't know," Dorian wept, clawing at the synthetic fibers of the floor.

"I swear to God, Marcus, I didn't know!"

"That is your crime, Dorian," Marcus whispered, turning back toward the shadows.

"A truly powerful man knows who feeds him."

"A fool simply bites the hand that sets the table."

"Now get out of this building before the demolition crews arrive at dawn."
