Chapter 11 - The Shadow of the Bloodline

The peace Serafina carved from the ashes of Dorian’s betrayal lasted exactly forty-eight hours.
The morning mist over the harbor had barely burned away when Marcus stepped onto the executive terrace.
He carried a black lacquered box bearing an embossed wax seal she had not seen since her eighteenth birthday.
The crest pressed into the scarlet wax was a twin-headed raven clutching an obsidian key.
Serafina’s fingers tightened around the porcelain edge of her teacup.
"Where did this come from, Marcus?" she asked, her voice dropping into an icy register.
"A courier arrived at dawn, dispatched directly from the private terminal in Zurich," Marcus replied, keeping his head lowered.
"It was accompanied by a certified registry from the Highgate Tribunal."
Serafina set her cup down upon the marble saucer without making a sound.
The Highgate Tribunal did not meddle in commercial affairs unless an ancient sovereign pact had been invoked.
She broke the seal with a slender silver knife.
Inside lay a single sheet of heavy parchment written in the hand of her late grandfather, Arthur Vance.
Beneath the faded ink rested a modern legal notice from Christian Vance, the elder half-brother who had been cast into exile seven years ago.
The words burned into the page like heated iron.
Christian was not dead as the society obituaries had claimed.
He had returned to reclaim what he called the masculine birthright of the Vance dynasty.
The letter stated that Dorian Castellane’s meteoric rise had not been entirely accidental.
Dorian had received private capital from an offshore trust known only as the Obsidian Syndicate.
Christian had funded Dorian’s lavish lifestyle through proxy accounts to keep Serafina blind and distracted while Christian bought up Vance Maritime’s sovereign bonds.
Serafina felt a sudden chill run down her spine, followed immediately by molten fury.
Dorian had never been a brilliant predator.
He had been nothing more than a blind pawn used by her own flesh and blood to systematically dismantle her shield.
Marcus observed her expression closely.
"Shall I assemble the security council, Lady Serafina?" he asked quietly.
"No," Serafina said, her eyes turning as sharp as diamonds.
"Christian wants a war in the dark because he knows he cannot survive in the light."

"Send a personal summons to Lady Eleanor Montgomery."
"If my half-brother has returned to our shores, the Montgomery matriarch was his harbor."
