Chapter 2 - The Chemistry of Betrayal

I stood suspended in absolute dread, my hands hovering over Theodore as if preparing to shield him from a bullet.
Raymond did not blink again for several seconds, his dark pupil fixed on mine with desperate intelligence.
I realized in that breathless second that my silence was the only shield standing between this helpless titan and whatever predator hunted him.
"Can you understand what I am saying, sir?" I whispered, leaning down so close my hair brushed his cold cheek.
One deliberate blink.
"Are you in severe physical pain?"
Two rapid blinks.
I felt goosebumps erupt along my arms and neck.
We had established a language of survival in less than sixty seconds.
"Does Christopher know you can hear?" I asked, my voice trembling.
Raymond’s eye moved sharply toward the hallway door, his brow furrowing into a deep groove of warning.
Right on cue, heavy polished leather shoes clicked against the marble outside.
I instantly scooped Theodore into my arms and stepped back toward the side table, grabbing a fresh washcloth to look busy.
The double doors swung open without a prior knock.
Christopher Winslow entered the room, his overcoat still damp from the December sleet outside.
He wore a platinum Patek Philippe watch that caught the chandelier light with an aggressive sparkle.
He did not spare a single glance for the dying man on the bed.
"Still breathing, I see," Christopher said coldly, pulling off his black leather gloves.
"Theodore's fever broke, Mr. Winslow," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on the floorboards.
"I don't care about your brat, Nora," Christopher snapped, walking over to pour himself a glass of Raymond’s twenty-year-old scotch.
"What I care about is this circus ending before Friday's board meeting."
"The doctor said his organs are shutting down naturally," I lied, my voice steady despite the terror threatening to choke me.
"Naturally?" Christopher chuckled, a dry, cruel sound that turned my stomach.
"Everything in this world is natural if you have enough money to buy the paperwork."
He checked his watch again and frowned with impatience.
"Dr. Wallace will be arriving at precisely four o'clock for the final booster."
"Make sure this room doesn't smell like baby vomit when he gets here, or you'll be sleeping under the highway overpass tonight."
He downed the amber liquid in one swallow and walked out, slamming the mahogany door behind him.
The moment the latch clicked, Raymond’s breathing grew ragged.
I rushed back to his side, leaning over the brass railing.
Raymond parted his lips, fighting through intense physical resistance to speak.
"Christopher... is not waiting for my will," Raymond whispered, every syllable costing him immense agony.
"He is manufacturing it."
"What do you mean, Mr. Winslow?"
"Wallace's injection... is not medicine."
"It is a neuro-paralytic compound."

"They are suffocating my nervous system while making my brain scream in silence."
The grandfather clock in the corner struck three-thirty, leaving us thirty minutes before the executioner arrived.
