Chapter 18 - Secrets in the West Wing

"Order! Order in this court!" Judge Vance banged her gavel repeatedly, threatening to clear the room.

Arthur leaped to his feet.

"Your Honor! This is blatant grandstanding!" Arthur roared.

"The petitioner has produced zero certified chain of custody for any documents or DNA samples!"

"This is an ambush designed to sway public perception before the probate review!"

Judge Vance leaned forward, her eyes cold as flint.

"Mr. Sterling," the judge warned, "if you are making assertions regarding the biological lineage of a minor child before this bench, you had better present certified laboratory documentation immediately."

Sterling smiled, completely unbothered.

He opened his leather portfolio and handed three stamped legal copies to the bailiff.

"These are certified genetic profiling results completed twenty-four hours ago by the State Forensic Institute," Sterling announced smugly.

"We obtained a genetic sample from Theodore's crib linens during the lawful execution of a civil discovery order."

"The test conclusively proves that the child shares a ninety-nine point eight percent genetic match with the Vance family paternal line."

The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

My breath seized in my throat.

"That is impossible!" I screamed, standing up from the defense table.

"Theodore is my son! I gave birth to him in a public hospital in Cincinnati!"

"He has nothing to do with the Vance family!"

"Silence, Ms. Campbell!" Judge Vance slammed the gavel down.

"One more outburst and you will be remanded into custody for contempt!"

Raymond stood up beside me, placing a steadying arm around my waist, his voice cutting through the panic like steel.

"Your Honor," Raymond said, projecting absolute authority.

"If Harrison Sterling claims this child is tied to the Vance bloodline, then he has just destroyed his own client's case."

"Because if Theodore is a Vance, then Greg has zero parental standing to petition for custody."

"And under the Eleanor Winslow Memorial Endowment, any biological descendant of the Vance-Winslow union is the sole, untouchable beneficiary of the Bellevue Crest trust."

Sterling’s confident expression flickered.

He had attempted to play two contradictory hands: using Greg to claim parental kidnapping, while using the Vance ancestry to claim corporate fraud.

Judge Vance’s expression hardened.

She looked at the documents, then at Sterling, realizing the legal trap Raymond had just sprung.

"In light of these extraordinary and contradictory assertions," Judge Vance ruled, "this court orders all estate assets temporarily placed under neutral judicial escrow."

"Furthermore, the minor child, Theodore, will remain in the physical custody of his mother, Nora Campbell, under twenty-four-hour court-appointed marshals at Bellevue Crest."

"A comprehensive, independent genetic panel will be conducted by court-appointed medical officers in seventy-two hours."

"Court is adjourned."

The gavel fell.

We pushed through the swarm of reporters, surrounded by armed federal marshals who escorted us back into the armored limousine.

As the car sped back toward the estate, Raymond remained completely silent, staring out the rain-streaked window.

"Raymond," I whispered, tears streaming down my cheeks.

"Tell me what is happening."

"Whose son is Theodore?"

"How could he possibly match the Vance family?"

Raymond closed his eyes, a deep, ragged sigh escaping his chest.

"When Eleanor realized she could not bear children," Raymond confessed quietly, "her brother Julian was running an illegal private fertility clinic in upstate New York."

"They were harvesting embryos from young, desperate surrogate mothers without their legal informed consent."

"Your mother, Nora... worked at that clinic thirty years ago."

"She was one of the women Julian exploited before he fled the country."

I stared at him in utter disbelief.

"My mother?"

"Theodore is not Greg's son, Nora," Raymond said, turning to look at me with eyes filled with sorrow and truth.

"And you were never an accidental hire at Bellevue Crest."

"Eleanor spent the last months of her life searching for you."
