Chapter 9 - The Awakening of Elena Torres

In the reinforced panic room beneath the estate’s wine cellar, the smell of sterile antiseptic had replaced the scent of blood.

Dr. Marcus Vance sat on an iron stool with his left arm bound in a tight sling, adjusting the flow of an automated saline drip with his good hand.

Elena Torres lay on the military-style cot, her skin no longer deathly pale, though her breathing remained shallow and raspy.

Her eyelids twitched under the dim recessed lighting of the bunker.

Adrien stood near the heavy vault door, holding Mia in his arms.

The little girl had refused to sleep, clinging to Adrien’s leather jacket with a stubborn, fierce persistence that reminded him entirely of Mateo.

A soft, dry moan escaped Elena’s lips.

Mia gasped, squirming in Adrien’s grip.

"Mommy!" Mia cried out, her small voice breaking the heavy silence of the concrete bunker.

"Mommy is waking up!"

Adrien stepped closer to the cot and gently placed Mia on the edge of the mattress.

Elena’s eyes fluttered open slowly, clouded with confusion and the heavy lingering fog of the paralytic drug.

She blinked against the light, her gaze drifting past the ceiling pipes until it landed on her daughter's face.

A single tear tracked through the dried sweat on Elena's cheek.

"Mia..." Elena breathed, her voice so weak it sounded like autumn leaves scraping against pavement.

"My baby..."

Mia threw her small arms around Elena’s neck, burying her face into her mother’s hospital gown.

"I got Mr. Adrien," Mia sobbed, the tears she had held back for hours finally pouring out in a violent, weeping release.

"I knocked on his big door, Mommy."

"I told him you wouldn't wake up."

Elena lifted her right hand with agonizing slowness, her fingers trembling as she stroked Mia’s dark, tangled curls.

"You were so brave, mi vida," Elena whispered in Spanish, her lips brushing the child’s forehead.

"So brave."

Then Elena’s dark eyes shifted toward Adrien, who stood motionless at the foot of the bed.

Her expression tightened with a sudden, suffocating panic.

"Adrien..." she gasped, trying to sit up against the pillows.

"The chest... the key..."

"I found the chest, Elena," Adrien said softly, placing a steadying hand on her shoulder to keep her from tearing out the IV line.

"I opened it."

"I read Mateo’s ledger."

Elena froze, her breath catching sharply in her throat.

She closed her eyes in profound surrender, as though expecting a gunshot to follow.

"He loved you, Adrien," Elena wept, her shoulders shaking beneath the rough cotton blanket.

"He didn't want to work for the bureau."

"They arrested his younger brother in Albuquerque on manufactured drug charges when I was four months pregnant."

"They told Mateo that if he didn't feed them your ledger every month, his brother would die in a federal penitentiary."

Adrien pulled a wooden chair to the bedside and sat down, leaning his forearms on his knees.

"Why didn't he come to me, Elena?" Adrien asked, his voice thick with an emotion he rarely allowed anyone to witness.

"I would have moved heaven and earth to get his brother out of that cage."

"He tried," Elena whispered, opening her tear-filled eyes.

"The night before the ambush on Highway 36, Mateo went to his handler's safe house in Lakewood."

"He told them he was done."

"He told them that you were running a legitimate transport empire and that the cartel was the real cancer in Colorado."

"And that’s when they set him up."

"The handler sold the route to Victor and the Sierra wolves to silence him."

Elena reached out, her trembling fingers wrapping around Adrien's large, calloused hand.

"Before Mateo died in that hospital room, he told me that you were the only real family Mia and I had left in this world."

"He said the feds would come for that ledger eventually."

"He told me to hide it until Mia was grown, or until the day the wolves finally broke through the front gates."

Adrien squeezed her hand gently, feeling the warmth returning to her skin.

"The wolves are outside the gates right now, Elena," Adrien said, standing up straight.

"And I am going to make sure they never hunt again."
