Chapter 5 - The Lock on the Cedar Chest

The west residential wing had been sealed behind yellow police tape, placed there by Adrien’s private security to keep the staff away.

Adrien walked down the empty hallway alone, his footsteps muffled by the runner rug.

The morning light struggled through the rain-streaked windows, casting dull gray rectangles across the walls.

He entered Elena’s apartment and closed the door behind him.

The air still held the faint, sweet chemical odor of the poison that had brought her down.

The broken glass had been swept into a neat pile by Vance's medical orderly, but a dark stain remained on the linoleum where Elena’s head had rested.

Adrien walked past the kitchen into the small master bedroom.

The room was modest, smelling of lavender water and dried cedar.

A small crucifix hung above the double bed.

On the nightstand sat a framed photograph of Mateo Torres smiling in the summer sun, holding a newborn Mia in his arms.

Adrien paused before the picture, feeling an ancient, heavy guilt pressing against his ribs.

"I promised you, Mateo," Adrien murmured into the quiet room.

"I promised she would be safe."

He looked toward the foot of the bed.

There sat the antique Spanish cedar chest, bound in heavy, hand-hammered iron straps.

Adrien knelt before it and examined the lock mechanism.

It was an intricate 19th-century mortise lock, brass and tarnished by generations of handling.

He pulled the clover-headed key from his pocket and inserted it into the keyhole.

It slipped inside with an easy, familiar resistance.

He turned the key clockwise.

A heavy, metallic thud echoed inside the wooden casing.

Adrien lifted the lid.

The rich scent of aged cedar wood billowed into the room.

Inside lay several neatly folded wool blankets, baby clothes that Mia had outgrown, and a small stack of personal letters tied with a red ribbon.

Adrien set the keepsakes aside with reverent care.

At the very bottom of the chest lay a false floor of thin plywood.

He pried it upward using the blade of his pocketknife.

Beneath the wood lay an object wrapped in oilcloth, alongside an old leather-bound ledger.

Adrien removed the package and unwrapped the oilcloth.

Inside was a military-grade satellite phone and an encrypted USB drive with a serial number stamped in red.

The serial number belonged to the federal government.

Adrien’s breath caught in his throat.

This was not syndicate business.

This was a federal asset drop.

He opened the leather ledger with shaking fingers.

The handwriting inside was not Elena’s.

It was Mateo’s.

The entries dated back seven years, long before Mateo took the bullet in Boulder.

Mateo had not been just a loyal driver.

Mateo had been an undercover operative embedded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to map out the entire financial spine of the Vale organization.

Adrien sat back on the floor, the realization hitting him like a physical blow.

The man he had mourned as a brother, the man whose sacrifice he had honored for six long years, had been building a case to send him to ADX Florence for the rest of his natural life.

Adrien turned the page with trembling fingers.

The entries continued until the day before Mateo’s death.

The final entry was written in rushed, chaotic handwriting:

"They know what I am.

The Sierra cartel discovered my handler's identity.

They didn't tell Adrien.

They are using Victor Hale to leak the transport route so they can kill both of us on Highway 36.

If I don't survive tomorrow, Elena has instructions to destroy this book.

God forgive me, Adrien is a better man than the monsters I report to."

Adrien closed the ledger, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Mateo had not been trying to destroy him at the end.

Mateo had discovered that Victor Hale was orchestrating the ambush to clear the board for a new alliance with the Sierra syndicate.

And Elena had kept the ledger hidden all these years out of pure terror.

Why had she brought it out now?

Why had someone come for her last night after six years of silence?

Adrien's encrypted radio burst to life with frantic static.

"Boss!" Jackson’s voice screamed through the speaker, accompanied by the sharp, deafening rattle of automatic gunfire.

"We’re under attack in the sub-basement!"

"They cut the primary power to the medical clinic!"

"Dr. Vance is down!"

"They’re coming for Elena!"

Adrien shoved the drive and the ledger into his jacket, drew his Glock, and kicked open the bedroom door.

May you like

The war had not arrived from the outside.

It had been sleeping in his house all along.
