Chapter 6 - The Arrest on the Courthouse Steps

The marble doors of the Virginia state courthouse swung open,

revealing a bright afternoon sky,

and a crowd of reporters waiting along the stone stairs.

I stepped outside into the cool breeze,

holding my leather briefcase tightly in my right hand,

feeling the immense weight of the past three years lift from my shoulders.

Behind me,

the heavy mahogany doors echoed loudly as they closed,

sealing off the courtroom where my family's lies had been ripped apart.

Before I could take three steps down the wide stairs,

four black sport utility vehicles pulled up along the curb,

their red and blue emergency lights flashing silently against the concrete.

Armed federal officers and state investigators stepped out of the vehicles,

wearing dark suits,

gold badges clipped to their belts,

and official law enforcement windbreakers.

At the front of the group walked Special Agent Marcus Vance,

my senior colleague from the Federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.

Marcus looked up at me with a sharp,

knowing smile,

nodding his head in silent acknowledgment of our success.

"Sarah,"

Marcus said,

his deep voice echoing across the courtyard,

"we received the emergency warrant signed by Judge Whitmore ten minutes ago."

"They are still inside the main hallway,"

I replied calmly,

pointing back toward the double doors.

"My father,

my mother,

and Richard Hale are being escorted out by court bailiffs as we speak."

Just then,

the wooden doors burst open once more.

My father,

Michael Vance,

stumbled out onto the landing,

his face flushed red with rage,

his tie crooked,

and his hair disheveled.

My mother walked right beside him,

sobbing uncontrollably into a lace handkerchief,

her designer handbag dangling limply from her arm.

Richard Hale followed closely behind,

sweat dripping down his neck,

frantically dialing a phone number on his mobile device.

"Michael Vance!"

Agent Marcus called out,

stepping up the stairs with two uniformed state troopers right behind him.

"Stop where you are!"

My father stopped dead in his tracks,

his eyes widening in absolute terror as he saw the badges and flashing lights.

"What is the meaning of this?"

my father screamed,

his voice cracking with desperation.

"I am a prominent businessman in this city!

You have no right to intercept me!"

"Mr. Vance,"

Marcus said with cold professional authority,

pulling a heavy white document from his jacket,

"you are under arrest for grand larceny,

wire fraud,

forgery,

and conspiracy to commit financial exploitation of an elderly individual."

"No!"

my mother shrieked,

backing away toward the stone pillar,

"This is a mistake!

It was all Richard Hale's idea!

He told us to take the money!"

Richard Hale froze,

dropping his phone onto the hard stone step,

his jaw dropping in total shock.

"Patricia,

you lying woman!"

Hale shouted back,

pointing a trembling finger at my mother.

"You signed the transfer authorizations yourself!

You spent two hundred thousand dollars of that money on private jets and diamond jewelry in Miami!"

"Shut up!"

my father yelled at Hale,

raising his fist as if he were going to strike his own lawyer on the courthouse steps.

"Both of you shut up!"

A state trooper immediately grabbed my father's arm,

twisting it behind his back with practiced swiftness,

and snapped stainless steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"You have the right to remain silent,"

the trooper recited sternly,

forcing my father down onto his knees on the cold marble stairs.

"Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

My father thrased against the constraints,

looking up at me through tears of humiliation and fury.

"Sarah!"

he howled,

his voice echoing down the street where passersby had gathered to watch.

"Tell them to stop!

I am your father!

You are destroying your own blood!"

I stood at the top of the stairs,

looking down at him without a single drop of pity in my heart.

"You destroyed this family long ago,

Michael,"

I said,

my voice ringing clear across the courtyard.

"You chose money over your mother,

greed over honor,

and lies over your daughter.

Now you will face the truth."

The second trooper placed handcuffs on Richard Hale,

who looked down at the ground,

his face completely devoid of color,

his prestige and career shattered beyond repair.

A female officer approached my mother,

gently but firmly placing her hands behind her back,

clicking the cuffs around her delicate wrists.

"My coat!"

my mother cried,

her artificial elegance completely disintegrating into hysterical tears.

"Don't touch me!

This is unjust!

I am Patricia Vance!"

"Not anymore,"

I whispered under my breath as the officers led them down the steps.

The reporters rushed forward,

their camera flashes blinking rapidly like artificial lightning,

capturing every single second of my parents' public downfall.

They were pushed into the back of the black utility vehicles,

their luxury lifestyles ending on the hard vinyl seats of law enforcement cars.

Agent Marcus walked back up to my side,

watching the vehicles pull away into the heavy city traffic.

"That was immaculate work,

Sarah,"

Marcus said,

handing me a sealed plastic evidence folder.

"We searched Vance Strategic Holdings' main office an hour ago under a federal search warrant.

What we found in their vault makes the six hundred thousand dollars look like pocket change."

I looked at the folder,

my eyebrows rising in curiosity.

"What did you find,

Marcus?"

"Your father wasn't just stealing from your grandmother,"

Marcus revealed,

his tone becoming dark and serious.

May you like

"He was laundering money for an offshore syndicate based in Panama.

And your grandmother's estate was supposed to be his final exit payoff."
