Chapter 15 - The Trap in Zurich

Smoke poured from the crumpled hood of the ruined Porsche,

the radiator hissing loudly in the cold garage air.

I approached the vehicle slowly,

my pistol trained on the driver's side door,

moving with cautious,

tactical precision.

The driver's airbag had deployed,

and through the shattered window,

I saw Julian Croft slumped over the steering wheel,

bleeding from a deep cut on his forehead.

He groaned softly,

his eyes fluttering open as he looked up at the barrel of my gun.

"It's over,

Julian,"

I said coldly,

stepping up to the window.

Julian spat blood onto the steering wheel,

a dark,

cynical laugh escaping his lips.

"You...

you really are...

Evelyn's granddaughter..."

he wheezed,

his voice weak but filled with malice.

"But you're...

too late,

Sarah..."

"What do you mean?"

I demanded,

keeping my weapon locked on him.

"The master ledger..."

Julian gasped,

a sinister smile spreading across his bloody face.

"The master ledger for the entire syndicate...

it's not in New York...

it's inside the main vault of the Swiss Private Bank of Zurich..."

He coughed heavily,

clutching his bruised ribs.

"In twelve hours...

an automated protocol will release those forged land deeds...

and transfer Evelyn's entire European property portfolio to the Panamanian syndicate...

unless the physical master drive inside vault 88 is manually destroyed..."

At that moment,

Marcus and four armed tactical officers burst into the subterranean garage,

their flashlights illuminating the crash scene.

"We've got him!"

Marcus shouted,

moving in to pull the injured Julian Croft out of the vehicle and secure him in handcuffs.

Marcus looked at me,

noticing the intense,

unwavering focus in my eyes.

"Sarah,

are you hit?"

"No,"

I replied,

holstering my ceramic weapon and pulling out my secure communications phone.

"Marcus,

book two tickets on the first supersonic private jet to Switzerland."

"Switzerland?"

Marcus asked in surprise.

"Julian is in custody!

We got the leader!"

"Julian was just the manager on the ground,"

I explained,

walking toward the elevator.

"The real brain of the operation is the automated system sitting inside the Swiss Private Bank of Zurich.

If we don't get inside vault 88 before sunrise tomorrow,

Grandma Evelyn’s entire European legacy will be permanently erased."

Ten hours later.

The sunrise over the snow-capped Alps illuminated the ancient,

cobblestone streets of Zurich.

The city was quiet,

clean,

and cold,

surrounded by the shimmering blue waters of Lake Zurich.

I stood in front of the massive,

fortress-like building of the Swiss Private Bank of Zurich on Bahnhofstrasse—one of the most secretive and secure financial institutions in the world.

Wearing a heavy cashmere trench coat and holding Grandma Evelyn's private mahogany authorization box,

I walked through the brass revolving doors alongside Agent Marcus Vance,

who was carrying official international legal execution papers issued by Interpol.

We were escorted down into the deep,

underground vault system by a high-ranking Swiss bank director wearing a three-piece suit and gold-rimmed spectacles.

"Ms. Vance,"

the director said in formal,

clipped English as we walked through a series of heavy steel security gates,

"your late grandmother,

Mrs. Evelyn Vance,

was one of our most valued clients for forty years.

Vault 88 has remained untouched since her last visit."

We reached the lowest level of the subterranean vault,

fifty feet beneath the city streets.

The room was lined with polished stainless steel walls,

housing massive,

circular vault doors that looked like the hatch of a battleship.

The director inserted his master key into vault 88,

entered a six-digit administrative code,

and stepped back.

"You have thirty minutes of private access,

Ms. Vance,"

the director said,

bowing slightly before stepping out of the vault corridor and closing the outer glass partition.

I pulled out Grandma Evelyn's silver locket key,

inserted it into the central lock of vault 88,

and turned it.

The massive steel door hissed as hydraulic pressure was released,

and slowly swung open.

Inside the small,

well-lit steel room sat a single black server box connected to an automated satellite terminal,

along with a locked metal briefcase.

"This is it,"

I whispered,

stepping inside the vault.

"The master ledger of the Croft Syndicate."

I opened my laptop,

plugged an encrypted federal data cable into the server box,

and initiated the manual override sequence to stop the automated land deed transfers.

OVERRIDE PROTOCOL INITIATED — 10%... 20%...

Suddenly,

a sharp,

heavy metallic sound echoed behind us.

CLANG!

The massive steel door of vault 88 slammed shut with thunderous force!

The heavy locking bolts shot into place with a series of loud,

definitive metallic thuds,

sealing us completely inside the airtight room.

"Marcus!"

I yelled,

spinning around.

Marcus rushed to the heavy door,

slamming his hands against the thick steel,

but it didn't budge an inch.

The overhead lights inside the vault flickered from bright white to a deep,

ominous red.

A cold,

synthesized voice spoke through the internal intercom speaker mounted on the vault wall:

UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY DETECTED.

AIR EXTRACTION PROTOCOL ENGAGED.

OXYGEN LEVELS WILL REACH ZERO IN TEN MINUTES.

I looked at Marcus,

whose face had turned deathly pale as we heard the soft,

hissing sound of the vault's air vents reversing,

sucking the oxygen directly out of the sealed steel room.

Through the bulletproof glass window of the vault door,

a man stepped into the outer corridor.

He was not a stranger.

It was Richard Hale's high-powered international defense attorney,

Victor Vance Jr.—Michael's hidden biological son who had managed the Swiss accounts from the very beginning.

Victor looked through the thick glass at us with a cold,

victorious smile,

holding the remote master override key in his hand.

"Goodbye,

Cousin Sarah,"

May you like

Victor whispered through the external speaker,

turning off the hallway lights and leaving us trapped inside the dark,
