Chapter 17 - The Unmasking of Victor Vance Jr.

The Swiss Federal Police interrogation room in downtown Zurich overlooked the frozen waters of the Limmat River.
The room was quiet,
stark,
and illuminated by harsh fluorescent lighting overhead.
Victor Vance Jr. sat at the center table,
his high-priced suit crumpled,
his hands cuffed firmly to an iron ring anchored into the heavy wooden surface.
Across from him sat Assistant U.S.
Attorney Catherine Ross,
Agent Marcus Vance,
and myself.
On the table between us lay the master hard drive retrieved from Vault 88,
along with twenty-four folders containing decoded financial statements from the Croft Syndicate.
"Mr. Vance,"
Catherine Ross began,
her tone ice-cold and professional,
"the evidence retrieved from Vault 88 has been fully authenticated by Interpol and the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority."
Victor stared down at the polished wooden table,
his lips pressed into a thin,
bitter line,
refusing to speak.
"Your automated land-transfer script has been completely dismantled,"
I added,
opening the primary dossier.
"Every single property title in Switzerland,
France,
and Germany that you attempted to seize from my grandmother’s estate has been permanently locked under international judicial protection."
Victor raised his head slowly,
his eyes filled with deep,
seething rage.
"You think you've won,
Sarah?"
Victor sneered,
his voice raspy and bitter.
"My father,
Victor Sterling,
built an empire that spanned three continents.
Michael was just a weak,
pathetic extension of our bloodline who couldn't even manage a real estate firm in Virginia without getting caught.
I was the one who ran the offshore accounts!
I was the one who controlled the syndicate!"
"And you are the one who is going to spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal facility,"
Marcus replied,
sliding an official document across the table.
"This is an international extradition order signed by the United States Department of Justice.
You are being transferred to Washington D.C.
tonight to face trial alongside your biological brother,
Michael,
and your accomplice,
Patricia."
Victor’s eyes widened in horror as he read the charges on the extradition papers.
"No..."
Victor whispered,
his confidence completely collapsing into terror.
"You can't extradite me!
I hold Swiss citizenship!
I have financial immunity!"
"Your financial immunity was revoked two hours ago when the Swiss Banking Board confirmed you used fraudulent identities and forged corporate seals to access Vault 88,"
I informed him calmly.
"You are no longer a respected wealth manager in Zurich,
Victor.
You are an international fugitive caught red-handed committing grand extortion and attempted murder."
Victor slumped back in his chair,
the weight of his total defeat finally crashing down upon him.
He realized that every bribe he had paid,
every hidden offshore shell company he had created,
and every secret plan he had devised had been stripped away by the very forensic precision he had ridiculed.
"Tell me one thing,
Sarah,"
Victor muttered softly,
looking up at me through dark,
hollow eyes.
"How did Evelyn know?
How did an eighty-year-old woman in Virginia discover my existence in Geneva before anyone else?"
I stood up from the table,
gathering my folders into my briefcase,
and looked down at him with a calm,
pitying smile.
"Because Grandma Evelyn never judged people by their words,
Victor,"
I answered softly.
"She judged them by their actions.
When Michael started transferring funds to Geneva ten years ago,
she didn't ignore it.
She spent three years quietly investigating your bank accounts long before I ever joined the federal task force."
I leaned closer to the table,
my voice steady and strong.
"She knew who you were.
She knew what you were planning.
And she spent the last decade making sure that when you finally made your move,
I would be standing right here to put you in chains."
Victor closed his eyes,
May you like
turning his head away in utter humiliation,
unable to utter another word as two Swiss officers unhooked his cuffs from the table and led him away toward the extradition transport.
