Chapter 14 - The Forensic Duel in Manhattan

Julian Croft’s eyes flashed with a sudden,
dangerous spark of anger.
"What did you just say?"
he demanded,
his smooth demeanor cracking for a split second.
"Look around you,
Julian,"
I said smoothly,
taking a slow sip of sparkling water from a glass I took from a nearby tray.
"Every single antiquity on display in this hall tonight—the Greek vases,
the Roman coins,
the Egyptian scarabs—was imported through a shell company called 'Croft Heritage Logistics'."
Julian’s jaw tightened,
his knuckles turning white as he clenched his hands into fists.
I continued,
my voice dripping with calm,
unforgiving satisfaction,
"the Federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network,
along with the United States Customs and Border Protection,
executed thirty simultaneous search warrants across your gallery locations in New York,
London,
and Geneva."
Suddenly,
the heavy glass doors at the main entrance of the museum swung open.
Agent Marcus Vance stepped into the grand hall,
accompanied by twelve uniformed federal agents and NYPD detectives.
The music stopped abruptly as guests began to whisper nervously,
stepping back toward the marble walls.
Marcus walked straight down the center aisle,
holding a thick stack of federal seizure warrants bearing the official seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
"Julian Croft!"
Marcus announced,
his voice echoing off the high stone arches.
"Under the authority of the United States Department of the Treasury,
all assets,
artworks,
and bank accounts associated with Croft Heritage Logistics are hereby seized under federal civil forfeiture laws!"
Julian backed away from me,
his eyes darting wildly across the room as he realized he had been walked directly into a trap.
"This is illegal!"
Julian shouted,
pointing at Marcus.
"I am a Swiss citizen!
You have no jurisdiction over my international holdings!"
"We don't need jurisdiction over Switzerland to seize the art sitting on American soil,
Julian,"
I pointed out,
stepping up beside Marcus.
"And without this art collection,
your syndicate creditors in Europe will realize you no longer have the liquidity to back your loans.
By tomorrow morning,
your offshore partners will turn on you just like you turned on my father."
Julian stared at me,
his breath ragged,
realizing that I hadn't just attacked his bank accounts—I had destroyed his credibility within his own criminal network.
In the world of high-level international crime,
a loss of credibility was a death sentence.
"You think you've won,
Sarah?"
Julian hissed,
a terrifying,
desperate smile breaking across his face.
"You think seizing a few statues stops me?"
He reached into his pocket,
hitting a button on a small black remote control.
Instantly,
the lights inside the massive Egyptian hall flickered and died,
plunging the entire museum into pitch-black darkness.
Screams of panic erupted from the high-society guests as people began pushing and shoving toward the exits in total chaos.
"Marcus!
Watch out!"
I yelled,
dropping to the floor as a sudden gun shot echoed through the dark hall,
shattering a glass display case nearby.
I pulled my compact ceramic pistol from my purse,
rolling behind a thick stone pillar as federal agents turned on their tactical flashlights,
beams of bright white light cutting through the chaos.
"Clear the room!
Get the civilians out!"
Marcus commanded through his megaphone.
Through the flashing lights and running crowds,
I saw a shadowy figure darting through the side exit leading toward the museum's basement service tunnels.
It was Julian Croft.
"He's heading for the underground garage!"
I shouted to Marcus,
not waiting for backup as I sprinted after him into the dark,
tiled corridor.
I ran down three flights of concrete stairs,
the sound of my heels clicking rapidly against the floor,
holding my weapon ready in a two-handed grip.
I burst through the heavy steel door into the subterranean parking garage,
where the air smelled of exhaust fumes and damp concrete.
At the far end of the garage,
a dark gray Porsche engine roared to life,
its tires screeching loudly against the slick concrete floor as it accelerated toward the exit ramp.
I raised my weapon,
taking a quick,
steady breath,
and fired three precise shots directly into the rear left tire of the accelerating sports car.
BANG!
BANG!
BANG!
The tire exploded in a cloud of rubber and sparks.
The Porsche swerved violently,
May you like
losing control,
and slammed headfirst into a massive concrete support pillar with a deafening crash of metal and glass.
