Chương 18 - The Flight to Geneva

The Caldwell Gulfstream cut through the Atlantic headwinds at forty-five thousand feet.

Below us, the ocean was an infinite sheet of black glass, broken only by the faint silver glimmer of moonlight.

I sat in the forward leather seat, the cassette tape resting beside a modern digital recorder Arthur had converted in our private hangar.

Through the noise-canceling headphones, I listened to my father's voice, captured twenty years ago on the deck of *The Sovereign*.

The sound of crashing waves was loud and chaotic.

Then came the voices.

*"You took the money, David!"* my father’s voice boomed, younger, furious, but unmistakably his.

*"You shorted the municipal bond issue using the firm's pension reserves!"*

*"I didn't take enough!"* David Sterling screamed back, his voice ragged with mania and terror.

*"Your family has owned this city for three generations! You won't miss forty million!"*

Then, the unmistakable crack of a gunshot.

The sound of metal hitting fiberglass.

A violent scuffle, followed by a frantic cry:

*"Drop the gun, David! The railing—watch the railing!"*

A loud splash.

Then nothing but the churning roar of the twin diesel engines and my father’s heavy, agonizing breaths.

*"Arthur! Throw the ring! Arthur, where is he?!"*

I slowly took off the headphones.

The cabin was silent save for the low hum of the jet engines.

The ledger Sloane possessed contained the forensic trail of the forty million dollars David Sterling had stolen, alongside the payout my father made to keep the scandal from collapsing Caldwell Enterprises.

Without the audio, the ledger looked like a cold-blooded accounting of an assassination payoff.

With the audio, it was proof of an armed embezzlement and an accidental drowning during a struggle for self-defense.

Arthur walked down the narrow aisle, carrying a porcelain cup of black tea.

"Our Swiss legal team is already in position outside Banque Privée Hentsch on Rue de la Corraterie," Arthur said, setting the cup on the mahogany table.

"Sloane’s plane landed thirty minutes ago."

"She checked into the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues under the name Sarah Sterling."

"Her appointment at the bank is scheduled for nine-thirty sharp."

"Has she contacted the press?" I asked, sipping the bitter tea.

"Not yet," Arthur said.

"She wants the Swiss bank to authenticate the documents and place them under custodial seal first."

"Once the bank verifies the signatures, she intends to hold a press conference at the Geneva Press Club at noon."

"She invited reporters from the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and Reuters."

"She wants a public execution," I whispered, watching the first light of dawn paint the eastern horizon in pale streaks of rose and gold.

"She wants me to watch my father’s statue torn down in front of the entire world."

"What is our plan, Elena?" Arthur asked.

"Do we intercept her at the hotel?"

"No," I replied, setting the cup down with a steady click.

"Ambushing a wounded daughter in a hotel lobby looks like panic."

"I want her in the bank."

"I want her sitting in the most secure room in Switzerland, surrounded by her high-priced lawyers, holding what she believes is the knife that will kill me."

"Because that is where we will show her the mirror."

I reached out, picked up the cassette, and slid it into my leather handbag.

"And Arthur?"

"Yes, Miss Caldwell?"

"Have the Swiss authorities arrest her the second she presents the documents."

"On what charge?"

I smiled, a cold, predatory curve of my lips.

"Receiving stolen property from Julian Ward."

"My husband didn't own those archives."

"And taking stolen corporate documents across international borders is an act of industrial espionage."
