Chương 14 - The Sovereign Trap

I looked up from the phone and locked eyes with Marcus Vance.
The color was rapidly draining from his sun-bronzed cheeks.
The Montblanc pen slipped from his fingers, rolling across the Persian rug until it stopped against my father's footstool.
"Is this true?" Marcus whispered, whirling around to face his lead counsel.
The two attorneys frantically scrambled through the three-inch-thick stack of loan exhibits.
Paper rustled violently in the silent room.
Glasses were adjusted; fingers traced lines of micro-print legal addenda.
The lead attorney’s hands began to shake noticeably as he reached Exhibit 14-B.
"Marcus..." the lawyer whispered, his voice trembling like a dry leaf.
"Exhibit 14-B defines the underlying collateral not as Caldwell Maritime LLC..."
"It defines it as Caldwell Maritime Public Trust, Series 2018."
"Which is... which is subject to Title 9 of the State Municipal Code."
"Which means?" Marcus snarled, his voice rising into an unrecognizable fury.
"Which means Julian is right," the lawyer choked out, looking down in terror.
"If we execute the acceleration clause at midnight, we don't seize the real estate or the docks."
"We forfeit our private creditor status."
"The seven hundred and forty million dollars becomes a non-callable, zero-coupon loan to the City of New York, maturing in 2052."
"We lose all liquidity."
"Vanguard Capital's private equity reserves will be locked in state escrow until our clients are in their seventies."
I picked up the burner phone, my fingers steady and calm.
"Julian," I said smoothly into the receiver.
"You've been remarkably informative tonight."
"Elena, please," Julian begged, his breath ragged against the receiver.
"Get me out of here."
"Sloane took everything left in the Miami safety deposit box."
"Marcus promised he would post my bail and wire ten million to Zurich if I signed the default papers this morning."
"He played me, Elena!"
"You played yourself, Julian," I said softly.
"You believed that sleeping with my father’s former executive assistant and scheming with my father’s oldest enemy made you a king."
"You forgot that in this house, you were never more than an employee."
"Elena, wait—!"
I pressed the red disconnect button, cutting off his desperate cries mid-sentence.
I dropped the phone back into the desk drawer, locked it, and looked at Marcus Vance.
His face was now gray, his eyes wide with a horrifying realization.
"You have thirty-eight minutes before midnight, Marcus," I said, leaning back against my father's leather chair.
"If your automated wire instruction fires in Frankfurt, Vanguard Capital collapses by tomorrow afternoon."
"Your investors will pull their capital before the morning bell rings on Wall Street."
"You will be sued into oblivion by every pension fund from Boston to London."
Marcus swallowed hard, the arrogance stripped away to reveal a cornered predator.
"Call your clearinghouse, Marcus," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper that chilled the air.
"Or let the clock strike twelve."
Marcus lunged forward, snatching his phone from his breast pocket.
His thumbs flew across the screen, his breathing ragged and uneven.
"Frankfurt!" he shouted into the phone the second the call connected.
"Abort the Caldwell transaction!"
"I don't care about the override codes! Abort the execution immediately!"
He stood there in the center of the library, listening to the German banker on the other end, his chest heaving under his bespoke jacket.
After thirty agonizing seconds, he lowered the phone.
"It's stopped," Marcus rasped, staring at me as if seeing a ghost.
"The wire is canceled."
May you like
"Good," I said, rising gracefully from my chair and smoothing down the emerald velvet of my dress.
"Now, let us discuss what it will cost you to leave my house alive."
