Chương 15 - The Price of Surrender

The air in the library remained heavy with the stench of Marcus Vance's panicked sweat.

His two lawyers were already packing their leather briefcases with trembling hands, eager to escape the room.

"What do you want, Elena?" Marcus asked, his voice hollow, his posture utterly defeated.

"You knew about this trap before I even walked into the ballroom, didn't you?"

"I knew my father," I replied simply, stepping around the large desk to stand before him.

"My father never trusted Julian with the grocery list, let alone seven hundred million dollars."

"When Julian approached you two years ago claiming he had access to Caldwell infrastructure collateral, you were so blinded by your family’s fifty-year hatred of the Caldwells that you didn't check the municipal codicils."

"You thought Julian was your inside man."

"In truth, Julian was my father's greatest Trojan horse."

I paused, letting the humiliation settle into his bones.

"Now, here is my offer, Marcus."

"You will sign over Vanguard Capital’s five-percent preferred stake in Caldwell Logistics directly to my foundation tonight."

Marcus’s eyes widened in outrage.

"That stake is worth two hundred million dollars!"

"And your freedom is worth significantly more," I countered, my eyes narrowing.

"If you do not sign over the stake by twelve-fifteen, Arthur will release Julian’s recorded jailhouse phone call to the Securities and Exchange Commission."

"Conspiring with a corporate fiduciary to trigger an unlawful default and manipulate municipal bonds is a federal felony."

"You won't just be ruined, Marcus."

"You will be wearing an orange jumpsuit in Otisville for the next fifteen years."

Marcus clenched his fists, his knuckles turning pure white.

He looked toward his senior counsel, hoping for an escape hatch.

The lawyer simply shook his head, looking down at the carpet.

"We have no defense against a market manipulation charge, Marcus," the lawyer whispered hoarsely.

"The SEC will freeze every asset Vanguard holds by sunrise."

Marcus closed his eyes, a deep, shuddering breath escaping his lungs.

"Bring me the transfer papers," he muttered.

Arthur stepped forward immediately, as if he had been anticipating the exact demand, and placed a three-page corporate assignment document onto the desk.

Marcus signed his name with a trembling hand, the ink bleeding slightly into the heavy parchment.

He tossed the pen down, not bothering to look at me.

"Are we done, Miss Caldwell?" he spat, venom lacing the title.

"Almost," I said softly.

"One more thing, Marcus."

"Julian mentioned that Sloane took everything from the Miami deposit box."

"What was in that box?"

Marcus stared at me for a long moment, a bitter, twisted smile slowly creeping back onto his lips.

"You think Julian was working alone with me?" Marcus whispered, his voice dark with malice.

"Julian didn't have the brains to open an offshore account without help."

"Sloane wasn't just his mistress, Elena."

"Sloane is the daughter of David Sterling."

The name hit the room like an icy draft.

David Sterling.

My father’s former chief financial officer, who had mysteriously drowned in the Hudson River twenty years ago after being accused of embezzling forty million dollars from our family accounts.

"She didn't sleep with Julian because she loved him," Marcus whispered, leaning in.

"She spent three years sleeping in your husband’s bed to find the ledger that proved your father killed hers."

"And tonight, Elena... she’s already on a private jet to Geneva with every original page."
