Chapter 4 - The Gala of Vipers

By seven o’clock the following evening, the Moretti estate was buzzing with nervous tension.
Madame Laurent had kept her word, delivering a masterpiece crafted of midnight-blue velvet and shimmering sapphire underlay.
The gown was constructed with structured boning that accentuated my waist while allowing the heavy, luxurious fabric to drape gracefully over my hips.
It didn't hide my body; it celebrated it, turning my curves into an aura of majestic elegance.
My brown hair was pinned into an intricate updo, with loose curls framing my face, highlighting my hazel eyes.
When I stepped down the sweeping marble staircase, Vincent was waiting at the bottom.
He wore a classic black tuxedo that made him look impossibly dangerous and regal, his silver-streaked hair brushed back flawlessly.
His eyes traveled up the stairs, locking onto me, and for a fleeting moment, the ruthless mob boss looked completely struck.
He offered his arm as I reached the final step.
"You look exquisite, Evelyn," he said, his voice deep and entirely sincere.
"Thank you, Vincent," I replied, my heart fluttering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"Are you sure I am ready for this?"
"These people are wolves," he warned, leaning close enough that I could smell his sandalwood and cedar cologne.
"The entire Chicago elite will be there, including Alberto Rossi."
"They want to see me fail; they want to see you break."
"Remember who you are tonight."
"You are Evelyn Moretti."
"You answer to no one, and you fear no one."
The Winter Charity Gala was held at the Drake Hotel's grand ballroom, an ocean of crystal, ice sculptures, and diamonds.
The moment the double doors opened and the butler announced, "Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Moretti," the room went completely still.
Whispers spread like wildfire across the ballroom floor.
"Mrs. Moretti?"
"Who is she?"
"Where did she come from?"
"Look at the size of her!"
I felt the prickle of hundreds of judgmental eyes searing into my skin, but Vincent gently pressed his hand against the small of my back, anchoring me.
Across the room, a group of people parted to reveal an older man with silver hair, an impeccably tailored navy suit, and eyes like a reptile.
Senator Alberto Rossi.
Beside him stood his younger daughter, Bianca Rossi, dripping in diamonds and wearing a crimson dress designed to demand attention.
Alberto walked toward us, his cane striking the parquet floor with rhythmic menace.
"Vincent," Alberto greeted, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen.
"We were beginning to think you wouldn't show your face after failing to produce a suitable nanny for my granddaughters."
"And who is this charming creature you've brought as your plus-one?"
"This is not my plus-one, Alberto," Vincent replied calmly, his arm tightening around my waist.
"This is my wife, Evelyn Moretti."
Bianca Rossi let out a loud, mocking gasp that drew the attention of nearby senators and judges.
"Your wife?" Bianca scoffed, looking at me with pure disdain.
"Vincent, darling, have you lost your mind?"
"You replace my poor, elegant sister with... this domestic cow?"
"Did you find her in the kitchen of a soup kitchen, or did she wander in from a cattle auction?"
Cruel chuckles rippled through the surrounding crowd of socialites.
My face burned with humiliation, but then I looked into Alberto Rossi’s cold, calculating eyes and remembered Mia and Lily trembling in the cold.
I remembered this was the man who wanted to rip those traumatized little girls away from their home for corporate shares.
I lifted my chin, pulled back my shoulders, and stepped forward, meeting Bianca’s gaze directly.
"A woman who defines her value solely by her dress size usually does so because her soul is too hollow to measure, Miss Rossi," I said, my voice projecting clearly across the silent circle.
"Claudia was a mother who died protecting her children's father."
"To invoke her memory to insult another woman shows that whatever elegance your family bought with political bribes, it never bought you class."
Gasps echoed through the ballroom.
Bianca’s mouth dropped open in shock, her face turning crimson to match her dress.
Senator Rossi’s eyes hardened into murderous slits.
"How dare you speak to my daughter like that, you common tramp," Alberto hissed, raising his cane slightly.
Before the cane could move an inch, Vincent stepped between us, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over the senator.
"Watch your tongue in the presence of my wife, Alberto," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that sent a chill through the entire room.
"Evelyn speaks the truth."
"And let me make this abundantly clear to every man and woman in this room tonight."
Vincent raised his voice slightly, ensuring every influential ears caught every syllable.
"The woman standing beside me risked her life on the concrete yesterday to save my daughters while their Rossi-hired nanny ran like a coward."
"She has brought voice back into a house that knew only grief."
"Anyone who disrespects her disrespects me."
"And you all know what happens when you cross Vincent Moretti."
The silence in the grand ballroom was deafening.
Alberto Rossi gripped his cane until his knuckles turned white, realizing that his public humiliation campaign had completely backfired.
"This isn't over, Vincent," Alberto snarled quietly.
"The custody court will see what she really is."
"We will see you in court, Alberto," I responded with unwavering steady resolve.
As Vincent led me toward the center of the dance floor, the crowd parted before us like the Red Sea, bowing their heads in newfound respect and fear.
When he took my hand to begin the waltz, his fingers squeezed mine with something resembling genuine awe.
May you like
"You were magnificent," he whispered against my ear as we turned under the crystal lights.
For the first time in my life, I felt like I truly belonged somewhere.
