Chapter 10 - The Queen of Moretti

The Cook County Family Courthouse was bathed in crisp Monday morning sunlight.

The corridors were packed with hundreds of reporters, photographers, and curious citizens who had followed the sensational downfall of Senator Rossi and the miraculous heroism of the new Mrs. Moretti.

When the double oak doors opened, the entire gallery went silent.

Vincent walked into the courtroom, his head held high, his tailored suit immaculate.

Beside him, holding his arm with grace and majesty, was me.

Madame Laurent had personally delivered an ivory cashmere coat dress that morning, crying tears of apology and pride as she fitted it over my shoulders.

My head bandage was hidden beneath my elegantly styled hair, and on my hand, the emerald ring sparkled like an unyielding banner of victory.

Between us walked Mia and Lily, wearing matching white dresses and patent leather shoes, holding our hands with bright, fearless smiles.

Judge Harrison, an elderly jurist with a reputation for absolute integrity, took his seat at the high bench.

He reviewed the thick binder presented by Eleanor Vance, along with the certified reports from the federal investigation.

"In my thirty-five years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case so clear," Judge Harrison began, his deep voice carrying through the packed chamber.

"The allegations brought against Mr. Vincent Moretti by the late Senator Rossi have been proven to be malicious, criminal fabrications."

"Furthermore, the report provided by Child Protective Services indicates that the home provided by Mr. Moretti and his wife, Evelyn Moretti, is exceptional in its stability, safety, and emotional nurture."

The judge looked down at the two little girls sitting at our table.

"Mia, Lily, would you like to say anything to the court before I make my ruling?"

The gallery held its breath.

Mia stood up from her chair, her small hand firmly gripping mine.

She looked directly up at the judge's bench, her clear voice ringing through the silent room like a silver bell.

"We want our mama and papa," Mia said clearly.

"Evie is our mama."

"We want to stay home with them forever."

Tears spilled over my cheeks, and beside me, Vincent squeezed my hand so tightly our rings clicked together.

Judge Harrison smiled warmly, a rare sight in a courtroom of this gravity.

"Then it is so ordered," the judge proclaimed, bringing his heavy wooden gavel down with a resounding crack that echoed through the room.

"Full, permanent, and sole legal custody of Mia and Lily Moretti is hereby granted to Vincent and Evelyn Moretti."

"Court is adjourned."

The gallery erupted into applause.

Vincent turned to me, scooped me up into his arms right there before the judge, the cameras, and the entire city of Chicago, and spun me around with a joyous laugh that shattered every rumor of his cold heart.

He kissed me on the lips with a fierce, beautiful passion that made the flashbulbs explode like a thousand stars.

"You are my wife," he whispered against my mouth as he set me down, his dark eyes filled with tears of absolute devotion.

"My love, my anchor, and the queen of my life."

"And you are my home, Vincent," I replied softly, resting my forehead against his.

Three months later, on a warm spring afternoon, the gardens of the Moretti estate were blooming with thousands of white roses.

There were no bodyguards with drawn weapons, no inspectors, and no shadows from the past.

A small, intimate vow-renewal ceremony was held beneath a grand floral arch overlooking the sparkling lake.

I wore an ivory lace gown designed specifically for my curves, feeling more beautiful than any queen in history.

Mia and Lily served as our flower girls, tossing rose petals along the stone path with bright laughter.

When the minister pronounced us husband and wife in the eyes of God, Vincent slid a second ring onto my finger: a platinum band inscribed with the words, *My Heart, My Home, My Queen.*

That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Chicago sky in shades of gold and violet, I stood on the master bedroom balcony watching our daughters play tag on the lush green lawn below.

Vincent stepped out behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder.

"A penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti?" he murmured softly, kissing the crook of my neck.

I leaned back against his solid chest, looking at the golden wedding band shining on my finger, then down at the two beautiful girls who called me Mama.

I remembered the bitter winter morning outside the Grand Imperial Hotel, three days without food, being told I was too worthless to clean floors.

I had thought my story was over.

In reality, the universe was only clearing the path for me to claim my crown.

"I was just thinking," I smiled, turning in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck.

May you like

"That sometimes, the darkest storms lead you directly to the place where you belong."

Vincent smiled, his dark eyes reflecting all the love in the universe, and pulled me in for a kiss that promised forever.
