Chapter 19 - The Traitor Unmasked

The storm showed no sign of letting up as dawn approached, painting the Chicago skyline in bruised shades of purple and slate gray.

In the underground wine cellar of the estate, converted into a high-security interrogation room, three of Vincent’s top lieutenants sat handcuffed to steel chairs.

Silvio, the veteran consigliere who had served Vincent's father for thirty years.

Lorenzo, the capo overseeing the rail freight network.

And Matteo, the young tech specialist who managed our encrypted surveillance feeds.

Vincent stood before them in a fresh black suit, a heavy iron crowbar resting casually in his right hand.

I stood at the back of the room, near the reinforced door, watching with cold detachment.

The woman who had once quivered in the cold outside the Grand Imperial was gone, burned away by the fire of protecting her children.

"One of you sold the security protocols of my daughters' nursery to Julian Valenti," Vincent spoke softly, the tip of the iron bar dragging across the concrete floor with a screeching scrape.

"The man who confesses right now dies quickly. The two who lie will watch me peel their lives away piece by piece."

"Vincent, you know me!" Silvio cried, sweat pouring down his wrinkled brow.

"I served your father! I helped put you on this throne!"

"My father is dead, Silvio," Vincent replied coldly.

"And his throne is bathed in blood."

Vincent turned his gaze toward Lorenzo, whose left hand was twitching slightly on his knee.

"Lorenzo," I spoke up, stepping forward into the fluorescent glare.

Every eye in the room turned to me.

"You bought three offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands last Tuesday," I said, reading from the financial printouts Marco had just retrieved from our server.

"Accounts funded through a shell company registered to a port facility in Palermo."

Lorenzo’s face drained of color, his breathing turning shallow and fast.

"He promised me the south yards, Vincent!" Lorenzo spat, suddenly breaking his silence with raw, bitter hatred.

"Your father promised my family the harbor thirty years ago, and then you gave the seat to this street gutter bride!"

"You made a whore with dirty blood the queen of Chicago, while we bled for pennies!"

Before the word *queen* finished echoing off the concrete, Vincent stepped forward.

The iron bar struck Lorenzo’s shoulder with a sickening crunch, dropping the man and his chair sideways onto the floor in an explosion of screams.

Vincent planted his heavy boot on Lorenzo's throat, pressing down until the screams became muffled gurgles.

"Where is Julian?" Vincent demanded, his eyes burning with absolute madness.

"Tell me where his main bunker is, or I feed you to the incinerators at the south rail."

"He... he’s at the Calumet Grain Terminal," Lorenzo choked out, gasping for air beneath Vincent's heel.

"He has five tons of commercial explosives rigged to the central grain silos... he’s going to blow the entire shipping district at sunrise!"

Vincent leaned down, his voice barely a whisper against the traitor's ear.

"Thank you for your service, Lorenzo."

Vincent pulled his sidearm and ended the traitor's life with a single, muffled shot that echoed through the concrete chamber.

Silvio and Matteo turned their heads away, trembling in terror.

Vincent turned back to me, his suit spattered with crimson, looking like the terrifying mob king the world feared.

"Elena, take the girls to the Canadian safe house with Marco," Vincent ordered, his chest heaving.

"I am going to end this at the terminal."

"No," I replied, stepping past the pool of blood, reaching up to touch his cold, stained cheek.

"Julian is my brother. He wants the Valenti bloodline restored."

"If you go alone, he detonates those silos before you reach the gate. We go together."
