Chapter 7 - THE ENVELOPE IN THE POCKET

Luca winced slightly as my fingers brushed his chest.
"It's just a bruised rib," he said quietly, trying to reassure me.
But my hand lingered. I pulled the stiff, cream-colored envelope from his inner pocket.
It was sealed with a wax stamp. The Moretti family crest.
"What is this?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper over the approaching police sirens.
Luca’s expression shifted. The vulnerability in his eyes hardened into something entirely different—shame.
"Madison, don't open that right now."
But I already was.
My trembling fingers broke the wax seal. I pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment.
It was a legal document.
A contract of severance.
My name was at the top. It was dated for tomorrow.
The terms were clear: I was to be given a sum of five hundred thousand dollars, relocated to a different state, and strictly prohibited from ever contacting the Moretti family again.
It was signed by Luca.
The air left my lungs. The cold concrete floor seemed to tilt beneath me.
"You were firing me?" I choked out, looking up at him. "You were sending us away?"
Luca stood up, wincing, holding his bleeding arm. "Madison, please. Let me explain."
"Explain what?" I took a step back, pulling Ellie with me. The broken pocket watch she held suddenly felt like a cruel joke. "You just asked to be her father! And you have a contract in your pocket banishing us from your life?"
Mrs. Carter lowered the shotgun completely, her face tight with disapproval.
"Boss," she warned quietly. "Tell her."
Luca dragged a hand through his dark, dust-covered hair.
"The contract is real, Madison. I drafted it three days ago."
"Why?" I demanded, tears blurring my vision. "Because I was just bait? And now that you have Liam, my purpose is served?"
"No!" Luca’s voice cracked, a raw, desperate sound that echoed off the concrete walls. "Because of Vanessa!"
I stopped. "Vanessa?"
He took a slow step toward me.
"Vanessa found out who Liam was a week ago. She hired a private investigator. She knew he was coming for the key, and she knew the Syndicate council was questioning my leadership because of the missing money."
I stared at him, trying to process the words.
"She told me if I didn't marry her and merge our families' power, she would tell the council that I was sheltering the wife of the man who stole from us."
My blood ran cold.
In the mafia, sheltering a thief's family wasn't just a weakness. It was treason.
"The council would have ordered you killed," Luca whispered, his eyes filled with absolute agony. "Both of you. To send a message."
He pointed to the envelope in my hand.
"That money was my personal funds. It was untraceable. I was going to force you to leave tomorrow, under the guise of being fired, to get you out of the city before the council found out about you."
I looked down at the paper. It wasn't a termination.
It was a rescue.
"And the wedding?" I asked, my voice breaking. "You were going to marry her... just to keep her quiet about us?"
Luca closed the distance between us. He didn't care who was watching.
He cupped my face with his bloodstained hands.
"I would have married the devil himself if it meant keeping you and Ellie breathing."
My heart shattered, then immediately rebuilt itself, stronger than before.
He had been willing to trap himself in a loveless, toxic marriage to a monster, just to ensure my daughter and I survived.
"But you called off the wedding tonight," I whispered.
"Because she crossed a line I couldn't stomach," Luca said fiercely. "When she tried to take Ellie from you... I didn't care about the council anymore. I didn't care about the consequences."
He rested his forehead against mine.
"I'm done hiding you, Madison."
Before I could answer, the heavy steel doors of the garage burst open.
But it wasn't the police.
It was five men in tailored suits, carrying automatic weapons.
And walking behind them was an older woman with iron-gray hair, clutching a silver rosary.
May you like
Luca’s mother. The Matriarch of the Moretti family.
And she was looking directly at me.
