Chapter 2 - THE BRACELET LEFT ON THE MARBLE

The silence that followed Ellie's question didn't just fill the room.
It suffocated it.
Luca stared down at his fiancée.
The vein in his jaw ticked.
"You told her she couldn't call her mother 'Mommy'?"
Vanessa took a frantic step backward, her red silk gown brushing the chairs.
"Luca, you're not seeing the big picture. Your family's image has taken hits all year. The press calls you ruthless. Adopting a struggling staff member's child—"
"By stealing her from her mother?"
His voice was a deadly, terrifying whisper.
"She's just a maid!" Vanessa snapped, her desperation cracking her polished mask. "She has nothing! I was giving the girl a future. You should be thanking me!"
My stomach plummeted.
She wasn't just cruel. She was utterly detached from reality.
Luca didn't shout. He didn't raise a hand.
He simply turned to Marco, his towering head of security who had been standing silently by the door.
"Get her out of my house," Luca said. "The wedding is canceled."
Twenty-eight guests gasped in unison.
Vanessa let out a choked scream. "You can't do this! The invitations are out! The families have agreed!"
"Marco," Luca repeated, not looking away from her. "Remove her."
Vanessa scrambled to grab her designer evening bag from the table, her hands shaking violently.
As she yanked it up, the clasp caught on a silver butter knife. The bag flipped.
Lipstick, a compact mirror, and a heavy silver men's bracelet crashed onto the marble floor.
The guests barely reacted.
But I stopped breathing.
I knew that bracelet.
It had a distinct dent on the heavy clasp, right over the engraved initials: L.D.
Liam Davis.
My ex-husband.
The man who had vanished three years ago, leaving me with unpaid hospital bills and a crying toddler.
Before I could stop myself, I stepped forward.
"Where did you get that?"
Vanessa froze. Her eyes darted from the bracelet to my face, panic entirely replacing her anger.
Luca noticed immediately. He looked down at the silver chain.
"Madison?" he asked softly. "What is that?"
I couldn't tear my eyes away from it. "That belongs to Ellie's father."
The temperature in the room plummeted.
Luca’s dark eyes locked onto Vanessa.
The socialite was backing away, her breath coming in short, terrified gasps.
"It's just jewelry," Vanessa stammered. "I bought it at a vintage shop—"
Luca bent down and picked it up. He read the initials.
When he looked back up, his eyes were cold enough to burn.
"Liam Davis," Luca said quietly.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
How did Luca know Liam's name? I had never mentioned it on my job application. I only ever used my maiden name.
"You know him?" I whispered.
Luca didn't answer me. He took a slow, calculated step toward his former fiancée.
"Vanessa. Why do you have the bracelet of the man who stole two million dollars from my syndicate?"
The room spun.
Liam hadn't just abandoned us. He had robbed the mafia.
Vanessa backed into the wall. "He approached me! He said he needed money to stay hidden! He said if I gave him fifty thousand, he'd sign over his parental rights so the adoption would be legal!"
"You paid him?" Luca's voice was lethal.
"I needed the PR!" she sobbed. "I needed the wedding to be perfect!"
I felt physically sick.
My daughter wasn't just a prop for Vanessa's wedding. She was the collateral Vanessa used to pay off my criminal ex-husband.
"Marco," Luca ordered. "Lock down the estate. Nobody leaves."
Marco tapped his earpiece.
Then his face drained of color.
"Boss," Marco said, his voice tight. "Perimeter alarms just tripped. Someone breached the east gate five minutes ago."
Luca turned toward me, his eyes wide.
"Where is the pink backpack?"
I trembled. "Upstairs. In her room."
May you like
Luca pulled a gun from beneath his tailored suit jacket.
"He didn't just sell his daughter, Vanessa. He used your distraction to get inside."
