Chapter 1 - THE ENGAGEMENT DINNER DISASTER

"Put her back down, Madison."
Vanessa Bellini's voice cut across the dining table.
I froze with my hands beneath my daughter's arms.
Seven-year-old Ellie was kneeling on the marble floor, clutching a damp dinner napkin.
Pink frosting covered her little fingers.
Her yellow party dress was stained at the knees.
And twenty-eight wealthy guests were watching her try to wipe cake from the floor.
"Please, Miss Vanessa," I whispered. "I'll clean it myself."
Vanessa slowly lowered her champagne glass.
Her fitted red silk gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers.
"That isn't the point."
Ellie's lower lip trembled.
"I'm sorry."
Vanessa gave a little laugh.
"Then perhaps next time you'll remember where you belong."
I felt my chest tighten.
My daughter looked up at me.
"Mommy, please."
"I'm right here, baby."
Her tiny fingers caught my apron.
"Don't get fired."
I couldn't breathe.
Because those were words no seven-year-old should ever have to say.
I pulled Ellie to her feet.
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Madison, I didn't give you permission to stop her."
"She's just a little girl, ma'am."
"She's a little girl who needs to learn that other people aren't here to clean up after her."
I reached for the napkin.
"I'll take care of it."
But Vanessa leaned forward.
"Put her back down."
Then a man's voice interrupted us.
"Vanessa."
Luca Moretti had risen from the head of the table.
Thirty-five.
Dark hair.
Tailored black suit.
The kind of man who rarely raised his voice because everyone around him had learned to listen the first time.
He wasn't looking at the frosting on the floor.
He was looking at Ellie.
"Why is that child crying?"
Before I could answer, Vanessa smiled.
"Oh, darling, don't make a fuss. Madison brought her daughter into the dining room, and the girl knocked over the dessert. She volunteered to clean it up."
My stomach dropped.
Because Vanessa had just explained what happened.
And Luca hadn't even asked why my daughter was there.
My name is Madison Reed.
I was twenty-five years old, had worked as a housemaid at the Moretti estate for eleven months, and had spent the last forty minutes pretending I wasn't terrified of losing both my job and the little apartment that came with it.
Normally, I stayed invisible.
I polished silver.
Pressed linens.
Served dinner.
And tried to give my daughter a childhood that didn't feel as difficult as mine had been.
Ellie's father had left before her second birthday.
He hadn't called in almost three years.
My mother watched Ellie after school whenever she could, but she'd been recovering from surgery.
So Luca had allowed us to live in the small staff apartment on the second floor of the estate.
Ellie had her own bed.
A little desk beside the window.
And a pink backpack she hung on the same hook every afternoon.
She loved that room.
She called it home.
And I worked hard enough to make sure she could keep calling it that.
But Vanessa had never liked having my daughter in the house.
"Employees shouldn't confuse kindness with entitlement," she'd told me.
That afternoon, she'd given me another warning.
"One more problem with Ellie, Madison, and you can both find somewhere else to live."
So I'd kept my head down.
Until she made my daughter kneel in front of twenty-eight guests.
Now Luca was standing beside us.
"Madison."
My stomach tightened.
"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"
"Why is Ellie here?"
Before I could answer, Vanessa sighed.
"Because Madison apparently couldn't arrange childcare. I told her this was a formal dinner, but she brought the child downstairs anyway."
Luca slowly turned toward her.
"She brought Ellie without permission?"
"Exactly."
He looked back at me.
"Madison, did I ask you to bring Ellie down for dessert?"
I blinked.
"Yes, sir."
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Luca continued.
"I told Mrs. Carter I wanted the staff families who live here to join us for cake."
I nodded.
"Yes, sir."
He looked toward Vanessa.
"Then why did you say Madison brought her daughter without permission?"
She hesitated.
"I didn't realize you'd included the children."
Luca studied her.
"I told you at breakfast."
Vanessa forced a laugh.
"We've had a very busy day."
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked toward the pink frosting on Ellie's hands.
"Sweetheart?"
My daughter immediately straightened.
"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"
"Did you drop the cake?"
She looked toward Vanessa.
Then nodded.
"Yes, sir."
I closed my eyes.
Because I knew she was lying.
And I knew why.
Luca crouched until he was level with her.
"How did it happen?"
Ellie stared at her shoes.
"I was being bad."
His expression changed.
"That's not what I asked."
Her fingers tightened around my apron.
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"She was running around the table when she should have been sitting quietly."
Luca looked toward the untouched dessert plates.
Then toward the cake stand in the center of the table.
"Running?"
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes."
He turned toward me.
"Madison, was Ellie running?"
My mouth went dry.
I thought about the apartment upstairs.
Ellie's school.
The overdue bill at the pharmacy.
And what would happen if Vanessa made us leave tonight.
"No, sir."
The answer was barely audible.
Vanessa put down her glass.
"Madison, I suggest you think very carefully before contradicting me."
I felt my knees weaken.
Luca noticed.
He slowly stood.
"Why does she need to be careful?"
Vanessa blinked.
"What?"
"Why are you warning her about answering a question?"
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Because she's obviously going to defend her own child."
Luca looked back at Ellie.
"Sweetheart, were you running?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Then how did the cake end up on the floor?"
Ellie's lower lip trembled.
She looked toward Vanessa again.
And whispered, "I wasn't supposed to tell."
The dining room became quiet.
Luca's expression changed.
"Who told you that?"
Vanessa immediately laughed.
"Oh, for heaven's sake. She's seven, Luca. Children invent little stories when they're embarrassed."
Ellie flinched.
I felt her fingers tighten around mine.
Luca noticed.
He gently held out his hand.
"Ellie, can I ask you something?"
She nodded.
"Has anyone told you that you have to clean the floor to stay here?"
Her face crumpled.
Then she nodded again.
The silence was immediate.
Vanessa's smile vanished.
Luca slowly turned toward her.
"What did you tell this child?"
Vanessa looked irritated.
"I explained that living here is a privilege and that privileges come with responsibilities."
Luca stared at her.
"She's seven."
"And old enough to know better than to behave like this in front of guests."
He glanced toward Ellie's stained dress.
"Why was she on her knees?"
Vanessa sighed.
"Because she needed to clean up after herself."
"But Madison offered to do it."
"That would defeat the lesson."
Luca didn't move.
"What lesson?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Then answered, "That actions have consequences."
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Luca looked toward Ellie.
Then back at his fiancée.
"And what consequence did you threaten her with?"
Vanessa's fingers tightened around her champagne glass.
"I didn't threaten her."
Ellie started crying again.
"Mommy?"
I crouched beside her.
"Yes, baby?"
"Please don't let her take our room."
Something inside me broke.
I pulled her against my chest.
"I won't, sweetheart."
But I had no idea whether that was a promise I could keep.
Luca slowly turned toward us.
"Our room?"
Ellie nodded against my shoulder.
"The one with my pink curtains."
Luca looked at Vanessa.
"Why does Ellie think you're taking her room away?"
Vanessa gave an uncomfortable laugh.
"Madison has misunderstood our conversation about staff accommodations."
Luca looked at me.
"Madison?"
I couldn't speak.
He studied my face.
Then quietly asked, "Are you afraid of losing your job?"
My eyes immediately filled.
"Yes, sir."
"You won't."
Vanessa pushed back her chair.
"Really, Luca? You're going to take the maid's word over mine?"
He turned toward her.
"I'm asking why a seven-year-old believes she can be thrown out of her home for dropping cake."
Vanessa looked away.
Then Luca glanced toward the dessert table.
"Mrs. Carter?"
The head housekeeper stepped forward.
"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"
"Who served the cake?"
"I did, sir."
"Did Ellie knock the cake over?"
Mrs. Carter hesitated.
Vanessa immediately spoke.
"Mrs. Carter, I think we've embarrassed the child quite enough."
But Luca was still watching the older housekeeper.
"Did she?"
Mrs. Carter shook her head.
"No, sir."
Vanessa's face reddened.
"That's ridiculous."
Mrs. Carter swallowed.
"Miss Bellini asked me to bring Ellie a slice."
Luca nodded.
"Then what happened?"
"Miss Bellini said Ellie needed to say thank you properly before she could have it."
Luca looked toward my daughter.
"Did you say thank you, sweetheart?"
Ellie nodded.
"Yes."
Mrs. Carter continued.
"She did. But Miss Bellini wanted her to say something else."
Luca went still.
"What?"
Mrs. Carter looked toward Vanessa.
Then answered quietly.
"That she was grateful Miss Bellini allowed her and her mother to live here."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"There's nothing wrong with teaching gratitude."
Luca looked at Ellie.
"Did you say that?"
My daughter nodded.
"Yes, sir."
"Then what happened?"
Her eyes filled.
"She said I had to say it louder."
Luca stared at Vanessa.
"For the guests?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
Mrs. Carter continued.
"Ellie tried. She got upset. When Miss Bellini reached for the cake plate, it slipped from her hand."
The silence deepened.
Luca slowly turned toward his fiancée.
"Your hand?"
Vanessa looked away.
"Yes."
"So Ellie didn't drop it."
"It was an accident."
"Then why did you make her clean it?"
Vanessa had no answer.
For several seconds, Luca stood perfectly still.
Then he looked toward Ellie.
"Sweetheart, listen to me."
She slowly raised her tearstained face.
"You don't have to thank anyone for being allowed to live with your mother."
Her chin trembled.
"Really?"
"Really."
He looked toward me.
"Madison works hard. She earns her pay and the housing that comes with her job."
Ellie stared at him.
"Even if I make mistakes?"
Luca's expression softened.
"Even then."
The little girl began crying.
He crouched beside her again.
"And you never have to get on your knees in front of my guests because someone tells you you're less important than they are."
Ellie looked at her stained dress.
Then whispered, "But I ruined everything."
Luca smiled sadly.
"Sweetheart, it's cake."
She blinked.
He gently wiped a spot of frosting from her hand with a clean napkin.
"We can always get more cake."
For the first time all evening, my daughter smiled.
Just a little.
Luca pulled out the empty chair beside his own.
"Would you like to sit here?"
Ellie hesitated.
"That's Vanessa's chair."
He looked toward his fiancée.
"She can use another one."
The room went completely silent.
I helped Ellie into the chair.
Mrs. Carter brought her a fresh dessert plate.
And Luca personally placed a small slice of chocolate cake in front of her.
Ellie looked up.
"Thank you, Mr. Moretti."
He smiled.
"You're welcome."
Then she looked toward me.
"Mommy, can you sit, too?"
My throat tightened.
"I'm working, honey."
But Luca pulled out the chair on her other side.
"Not for the next few minutes."
He looked at me.
"Sit with your daughter."
My eyes filled.
"Mr. Moretti—"
"You've both had a difficult evening."
I sat.
And when Ellie leaned against me, I realized she'd spent most of the night worrying about protecting my job instead of enjoying being a child.
Vanessa sat motionless in her red gown.
Then Luca looked toward me.
"Madison."
"Yes, sir?"
"Your job is safe."
Tears slipped down my cheeks.
"Thank you."
"And you and Ellie aren't losing your apartment."
I couldn't speak.
He glanced toward Vanessa.
"No one is changing that without speaking to me."
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then he turned toward my daughter.
"Ellie, do you like living here?"
She nodded enthusiastically.
"Yes."
"What's your favorite part?"
She smiled.
"My window."
"Your window?"
She nodded.
"I can see the big tree from my bed."
Luca smiled.
"That's a pretty good view."
Ellie looked down at her cake.
Then whispered, "I thought I wouldn't see it again."
His smile disappeared.
"What?"
She looked toward Vanessa.
And the fear returned to her face.
I felt her little hand close around mine.
Luca noticed.
"Ellie?"
She swallowed.
"Vanessa said we had to leave tonight."
The room became quiet.
Vanessa immediately sighed.
"Oh, honestly. I said Madison's employment was being reviewed."
Luca slowly turned toward her.
"Reviewed by whom?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"By me."
He studied her.
"Why?"
"Because Madison has been having trouble following instructions."
Luca looked at me.
"What instructions?"
I couldn't answer.
Vanessa smiled tightly.
"Personal matters, Luca. Nothing worth discussing in front of guests."
He looked back toward Ellie.
"Sweetheart, did Vanessa tell you to pack?"
My daughter nodded.
"Yes."
"When?"
"This afternoon."
I stared at her.
"Ellie?"
She looked up at me.
"Yes, Mommy?"
"You didn't tell me that."
Her eyes filled.
"She said it was a surprise."
My stomach tightened.
Luca slowly leaned closer.
"What kind of surprise?"
Ellie swallowed.
"She said I needed to put my favorite things in my school backpack."
Vanessa went completely still.
Luca noticed.
"Why?"
The little girl's voice trembled.
"Because I might be going somewhere different after dinner."
The silence was immediate.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Miss Bellini?"
She looked away.
I could barely speak.
"What did you tell my daughter?"
Vanessa folded her arms.
"I was preparing her for the possibility that you might need to find other employment."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Her smile tightened.
"Because I didn't want you upsetting her."
I stared at her.
My daughter had spent the whole evening trying not to cry because someone had told her she'd lose her home.
And Vanessa was claiming she'd wanted to spare her distress.
Luca slowly turned toward me.
"Madison, did you resign?"
I shook my head.
"No, sir."
"Did anyone give you notice?"
"No."
He looked toward Vanessa.
"Then why did you tell Ellie she was leaving?"
Vanessa said nothing.
Ellie gently touched my arm.
"Mommy?"
I looked at her.
"Yes, baby?"
"Are we staying together?"
My heart stopped.
"Of course we are."
She stared at me.
"Even if we have to go?"
I pulled her closer.
"Always."
She began crying again.
Luca noticed the change in her voice.
He looked at her carefully.
"Ellie, why would you think you and your mom wouldn't stay together?"
She looked toward Vanessa.
Her fingers tightened around mine.
Then she whispered, "Because she said Mommy could go somewhere else."
The entire table went silent.
Luca slowly turned toward his fiancée.
"Somewhere else?"
Vanessa began shaking her head.
"She's confused."
But Ellie continued.
"She said I could stay here."
I stopped breathing.
"What?"
My daughter looked at me.
Tears ran down her cheeks.
"She said you might not be allowed to."
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Luca quietly asked, "Vanessa, what did you tell this little girl?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"I was trying to reassure her that she'd be looked after."
"While her mother was gone?"
"Only temporarily."
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
I looked at Ellie.
"Baby, did she tell you I was leaving without you?"
My daughter nodded.
Her face crumpled.
"She said if I was good, someone would let me stay."
I pulled her into my arms.
"No, sweetheart."
She started sobbing.
"She said maybe you didn't want me anymore."
The silence was unbearable.
Vanessa abruptly stood.
"That's not what I said."
Luca slowly looked up.
"Sit down."
She stared at him.
"Luca, please. She's seven years old. She doesn't understand—"
"Sit down, Vanessa."
His voice never rose.
But she obeyed.
Then he turned toward my daughter.
"Ellie, I need you to know something."
She looked at him through tears.
"Your mother loves you."
Ellie nodded.
"I know."
"And nobody here gets to tell you otherwise."
She buried her face against my shoulder.
I held her so tightly I could feel her little heartbeat against mine.
Luca looked toward Vanessa.
"Why were you discussing separating an employee from her child?"
Vanessa began crying.
"I wasn't separating anyone."
"Then why does Ellie believe she can stay here without Madison?"
Vanessa couldn't answer.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then my daughter slowly raised her head.
"Mommy?"
I brushed her hair back.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Can I tell you what she made me practice?"
My stomach dropped.
"Practice?"
Ellie nodded.
Vanessa suddenly went pale.
Luca noticed.
He leaned closer.
"What did she ask you to practice, Ellie?"
My daughter looked toward the woman in red.
Then whispered, "What I was supposed to say if somebody asked about you."
The entire dining room became quiet.
Luca's expression changed.
"Asked what?"
Ellie swallowed.
"Why you weren't taking care of me."
I stared at my daughter.
I couldn't speak.
Vanessa reached for her champagne glass.
But her hand was shaking too badly to lift it.
Luca noticed.
"Vanessa."
She looked up.
"Yes?"
"Who was going to ask Ellie that question?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
He waited.
"Who?"
Her voice trembled.
"Someone who helps families."
My chest tightened.
"What families?"
Vanessa looked away.
Then Ellie whispered something so quietly that only the three of us nearest her could hear.
"She said I had to tell the lady Mommy leaves me alone."
My eyes filled immediately.
"Ellie, I don't leave you alone."
"I know, Mommy."
Her voice broke.
"She said I had to say it anyway."
For several seconds, Luca didn't move.
Then he slowly looked toward Vanessa.
"You told this child to lie about her mother neglecting her?"
Vanessa began crying.
"Luca, please. I was trying to make sure Ellie had somewhere safe to stay if Madison lost her job."
He stared at her.
"By teaching her to accuse her own mother?"
She covered her face.
Nobody moved.
I could barely breathe.
Because I finally understood why Vanessa had insisted that I keep working through dinner.
Why she'd brought Ellie downstairs.
Why she'd made my little girl apologize in front of everyone.
She wasn't simply trying to embarrass me.
She was trying to make my daughter afraid of losing me.
Then a middle-aged woman seated near the end of the table quietly spoke.
"Mr. Moretti?"
Luca turned.
She wore a modest gray evening suit.
Vanessa had introduced her as a friend helping with the wedding arrangements.
The woman looked deeply uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry. I think there's been a serious misunderstanding."
Vanessa stopped crying.
Her face drained of color.
Luca looked toward the guest.
"What kind of misunderstanding?"
The woman glanced at Ellie.
Then at me.
"My name is Karen Doyle. I coordinate family-support services for a local nonprofit."
Luca nodded slowly.
"All right."
She swallowed.
"Miss Bellini asked me here because she said a child in your household might need emergency housing."
My heart stopped.
Luca slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Emergency housing?"
Vanessa immediately stood.
"Karen, this is a private employment matter."
But the woman continued.
"I was told Madison had already agreed to leave the estate."
Luca looked at me.
I shook my head.
"No, sir."
Karen's expression changed.
She looked toward me.
"I'm very sorry."
Then she added, "And I was told Ellie would be staying behind because you had refused to take her with you."
I felt my breath catch.
My daughter began crying.
"No, Mommy. I want to go with you."
I pulled her closer.
"You're not going anywhere without me."
Luca slowly stood.
He looked directly at Vanessa.
"You invited a stranger to my engagement dinner and told her Madison was abandoning her own daughter?"
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"I thought I was helping."
He didn't move.
"Helping whom?"
She couldn't answer.
Karen looked toward me.
Her voice shook.
"Madison, I need to ask you something."
I raised my eyes.
"Yes?"
The woman hesitated.
"Did Vanessa tell you why she wanted Ellie to remain in this house after you left?"
I shook my head.
"No."
Karen slowly turned toward the woman in red.
"Then perhaps Miss Bellini should explain what she told me about the announcement she intended to make at Saturday's wedding."
Luca went completely still.
"What announcement?"
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Karen looked at Ellie, still clinging to my uniform.
Then whispered:
"That she and Luca were giving an abandoned little girl a new home."
For several seconds, nobody at the table moved.
Luca slowly looked toward his fiancée.
"You were going to call Madison's daughter abandoned while her mother was standing in my house?"
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Then Ellie lifted her tearstained face.
May you like
And asked the question that made Luca turn completely pale.
"Mr. Luca... is that why Vanessa told me I could wear a pretty white dress at your wedding, but I wasn't allowed to call my mommy 'Mommy' anymore?"
