Chapter 6 - The Aftermath of the Storm

The boardroom remained frozen in utter silence,
as Arthur Pendelton called for an emergency vote on the executive suspension.
Adrian stood motionless at the head of the rosewood table,
his face completely drained of color,
watching the hands of his long-time allies rise one by one against him.
Ten out of twelve votes were cast in favor of my motion within less than thirty seconds.
The motion passed without further debate.
Marcus Bell entered the boardroom through the side entrance,
accompanied by two uniformed security officers,
instructed to escort Sloane Bennett off the corporate premises immediately.
Sloane wept bitterly as she was led away,
her hands shaking violently,
erasing years of calculated corporate ambition in a single moment of public humiliation.
She tried to catch Adrian’s eye as she passed him,
but he kept his gaze fixed on the mahogany table,
refusing to acknowledge her existence.
As the board members began filing out of the room in hurried hushed tones,
Adrian moved quickly to intercept me near the private elevator bay.
He grabbed my wrist,
his fingers tightening with a desperate,
terrified force.
"Nora,"
he choked out,
his voice cracking under the weight of his collapsing reality,
"you are destroying everything we spent fifteen years building."
"You are handing my family’s legacy over to federal prosecutors and vultures."
I looked down at his hand gripping my wrist,
then raised my eyes to meet his with cold,
unyielding disgust.
"You destroyed this empire,"
I whispered,
my voice steady enough to cut through his panic,
"the moment you put another woman in my bed,"
"and placed my forged signature on your crime."
"I am not destroying the empire,
Adrian,"
I added,
May you like
stepping past him into the opening elevator doors.
"I am simply taking back the keys."
