Chapter 13 - Cold Steel and Clean Hands

At eight o'clock the following morning,

I walked into the grand lobby of Vale Meridian Tower.

The atmosphere was electric,

filled with anxious employees,

whispering executives,

and dozens of news cameras parked outside the glass doors.

When I stepped off the private executive elevator on the sixty-fifth floor,

the entire floor was deathly silent.

Department heads,

senior partners,

and corporate attorneys stood outside their office doors,

watching me with a mix of awe and profound terror.

I walked straight into the main boardroom,

where Arthur Pendelton and the remaining untainted board members were waiting.

"Good morning,

everyone,"

I said,

taking my seat at the head of the Brazilian rosewood table where Adrian had sat twenty-four hours earlier.

"Mrs. Vale,"

Arthur Pendelton began,

his voice trembling slightly with tension.

"The federal prosecutors have requested full access to our internal accounting servers."

"The board is deeply concerned about secondary liabilities."

"The servers were turned over to Prosecutor Vance at six a.m. today,"

I informed them,

placing a sealed white envelope on the table.

"Along with a complete disclosure of every off-balance-sheet transaction authorized by Adrian Vale over the last five years."

A collective gasp echoed around the room.

"You gave them full access?!"

one director shouted,

standing up in a panic.

"That exposes the entire board to federal scrutiny!"

"It exposes those among you who took kickbacks from Sloane Bennett's offshore accounts,"

I corrected him,

my voice as cold and sharp as a surgeon's scalpel.

"Which is why I have already drafted formal resignation letters for four people in this room."

I slid four black folders across the smooth rosewood table.

Each folder was labeled with a board member's name.

"Sign them now,"

I commanded.

"You resign quietly for personal reasons,"

"or your name appears on the secondary indictment list by twelve o'clock noon."

The four directors stared at the black folders,

their faces turning pale as ash.

Without saying a single word,

they picked up their pens and signed the resignation letters on the spot.

"Marcus,"

I called out.

The door opened,

and Marcus Bell stepped into the boardroom with four security officers.

"Escort these gentlemen out of the building,"

I instructed.

"Revoke their security clearance,"

"and confiscate their corporate devices."

Within two minutes,

the room had been purged of Adrian's remaining loyalists.

I turned back to the remaining board members,

who were sitting upright,

their hands neatly folded,

staring at me with absolute obedience.

"Now,"

I said,

opening my primary ledger.

"Let us discuss the restructuring of Vale Meridian."

"From this moment forward,"

"this company will no longer operate in the shadows of its past."

"We are liquidating the maritime holding trusts,"

"we are terminating all offshore shell accounts,"

May you like

"and we are renaming the conglomerate Meridian Global Logistics."

"The Vale name dies today."
