Chapter 11 - The Execution of a Legacy

The heavy metallic thud of the lock closing behind me echoed through the marble foyer,

sounding like the doors of a prison cell slamming shut.

Adrian stood before me,

his glass of scotch dripping onto the polished oak floorboards,

his bloodshot eyes fixed on my face with a terrifying mixture of desperation and malice.

In the living room beyond,

the two broad-shouldered men from Naples stood up smoothly,

their tailored jackets unbuttoned,

their hands casually resting near their waists.

"You shouldn't have brought your war into my home,

Nora,"

Adrian said,

his voice low,

slurred,

and dangerous.

"I offered you peace."

"I offered you a quiet settlement,"

"and you responded by destroying my reputation in front of Wall Street."

"You destroyed your own reputation,

Adrian,"

I said,

stepping further into the room,

ensuring my hidden microphone captured every vibration of his voice.

"You forged my signature on federal filings,"

"and now you invite international syndicate enforcers into our home."

"Do you really think the Rossi family can save you from a federal indictment?"

One of the Italian enforcers stepped forward,

his leather shoes clicking against the hardwood floor.

"Mrs. Vale,"

the man spoke in a thick,

cold Italian accent,

"your husband owed us four hundred million dollars from the maritime logistics restructure."

"Harbor Nine was our collateral."

"By freezing that transfer,"

"you made yourself a direct financial liability to our organization."

"Is that why you are here?"

I asked,

looking the enforcer dead in the eye without a trace of fear.

"To intimidate the General Counsel into signing illegal property waivers under duress?"

"We are here to ensure business is conducted,"

the enforcer replied coldly.

"One way or another."

"Sign the transfer documents,

Nora,"

Adrian growled,

pulling a crumpled paper folder from his jacket and tossing it onto the glass table.

"Sign them now,"

"or you don't leave this house tonight."

"And if I refuse?"

I whispered.

"Then the Rossi family takes care of the problem,"

Adrian said,

his voice completely devoid of humanity.

"And I report to the press that my grieving wife suffered a tragic accident during the storm."

The words hung in the air,

heavy,

monstrous,

and absolute.

Through my concealed wire,

Federal Prosecutor David Vance heard every single word.

A sudden,

deafening shatter exploded through the front windows.

Glass rained across the foyer.

Flashbang grenades detonated with blinding white flashes and thunderous booms,

filling the room with thick white smoke.

"Federal agents!"

voices screamed from the darkness.

"Get on the ground!"

"Do it now!"

Armored tactical officers poured through the broken glass doors and patio windows,

weapons raised,

laser sights painting red dots across Adrian's chest and the two Italian enforcers.

The Rossi men threw their hands into the air immediately,

dropping to their knees without firing a shot.

Adrian stood frozen in total disbelief,

his scotch glass falling from his hand and smashing into a thousand pieces against the floor.

Tactical officers tackled him to the ground,

forcing his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

David Vance stepped through the broken doorway,

stepping over the shattered glass,

and looked down at Adrian struggling against the marble floor.

"Adrian Vale,"

Vance said calmly,

flashing his badge.

"You are under arrest for federal wire fraud,"

"extortion,"

"conspiracy to commit murder,"

"and racketeering."

I stood calmly amidst the smoke and chaos,

adjusting my trench coat,

and looked down at my husband crawling on the ground.

"I told you,

Adrian,"

May you like

I whispered softly over the sound of shouting agents.

"I brought the matches."
