Chapter 7 - Uncovering the Second Apartment

The secondary smartphone was locked behind a six-digit passcode,

but in the digital age,

betrayal leaves digital fingerprints everywhere.

I plugged the phone into my office laptop using a generic USB cable,

bypassing the primary OS encryption through a diagnostic debugging tool I had learned from a tech-savvy resident physician whose brother worked in cybersecurity.

Within twenty minutes,

the phone’s internal storage mounted onto my desktop screen,

revealing a treasure trove of hidden folders,

encrypted messaging apps,

and financial documents that made my stomach churn.

There were hundreds of photographs of Ethan and Mia vacationing in coastal resort towns during weekends he claimed to be attending corporate leadership seminars in Ohio.

There were photos of Mia holding up ultrasound printouts in front of a sprawling four-bedroom suburban house with a manicured lawn and a white picket fence.

But what caught my eye wasn't the domestic bliss of his second life; it was a folder labeled 'Acquisitions & Investments' containing legal documents,

property titles,

and corporate wire transfer receipts totaling over eight hundred thousand dollars.

I clicked on the wire transfer receipts,

my eyes scanning the banking routing numbers and corporate letterheads.

The money hadn't come from Ethan’s modest salary as a corporate department manager at Meridian Enterprises.

It had been funneled through a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under an LLC named 'Apex Medical Logistics'—a primary vendor that supplied surgical instruments and pharmaceutical products directly to our hospital.

My breath caught in my throat as the terrifying implications began to assemble themselves in my mind.

Meridian Enterprises didn't just manufacture office supplies; they held the exclusive distribution contract for surgical hardware across the entire Midwest hospital network where I worked as an attending physician.

Ethan wasn't just cheating on me with a younger woman; he was knee-deep in corporate embezzlement,

kickback schemes,

and medical supply fraud that could bring down half the executive board—and drag my name right down into the federal penitentiary alongside him.

Mia leaned over my shoulder,

her eyes scanning the computer screen as the financial records scrolled past.

'What is all of this?' she whispered,

her voice laced with sudden,

genuine terror.

'I thought he worked in marketing.

He always told me he was up for a promotion to vice president.

' 'Marketing doesn't pull in eight hundred thousand dollars in slush funds from pharmaceutical shell companies,

Mia,

' I murmured,

my fingers flying across the keyboard as I exported the files to an encrypted thumb drive.

'Your boyfriend wasn't just a corporate climber.

He was laundering money through medical supply chains,

and my hospital was his primary laundering machine.

' The realization hit me with the force of a freight train.

Ethan hadn't just betrayed our marriage vows; he had weaponized my professional workplace as the laundering hub for his criminal enterprise,

making me an unwitting accomplice in a federal felony.

I pulled the thumb drive from the laptop port,

dropped it into my coat pocket,

and looked up at Mia with cold,

hard resolve.

'The game is over,

Mia,

' I said softly.

'And if you want to keep that baby out of a federal foster care system,

May you like

you are going to help me tear his entire empire down to the bare dirt.
