Chapter 18 - Closing the Final Ledger

By late summer,
the federal asset forfeiture division finalized the liquidation of Ethan’s hidden properties,
shell company accounts,
and illicit assets,
returning the recovered funds to the corporate victims and hospital procurement boards.
My divorce decree was officially stamped and finalized by the Cook County family court,
legally erasing the last remaining administrative tether to my former husband.
I sat at my desk in the Chief of Emergency Medicine office,
signing off on the final quarterly budget reports when my administrative assistant poked her head through the doorway.
'Dr.
Bennett,
mail delivery from the federal district court,
' she said,
placing a slim manila envelope on the corner of my desk.
I thanked her,
waiting until she closed the door before opening the envelope with a letter opener.
Inside was a single legal certification confirming that all civil claims,
liabilities,
and marital entanglements associated with Ethan Bennett had been legally dissolved,
and my maiden name—Claire Vance—had been permanently reinstated across all state and federal databases.
I smiled quietly to myself,
taking a red pen and drawing a clean,
definitive line across my old personnel file where the name 'Bennett' had lingered for five years.
I walked over to the shredder in the corner of my office,
dropped the legal notice of dissolution into the rotating steel blades,
and listened to the satisfying hum as the paper was shredded into fine,
unrecognizable dust.
The past was gone.

The lies were incinerated.
Only the truth remained.
