Chapter 15 - The Federal Indictment Finalized

The federal courtroom downtown was packed with reporters,

legal analysts,

and financial auditors when District Judge Harrison banged his gavel to commence the sentencing hearing for United States v.

Ethan Bennett.

I sat in the back row of the public gallery,

wearing a sharp charcoal blazer,

my posture relaxed and unyielding.

Ethan stood before the bench in his orange jumpsuit,

flanked by a public defender who looked entirely exhausted by the sheer volume of incriminating evidence stacked against his client.

Judge Harrison’s voice echoed through the wood-paneled courtroom with solemn gravity.

'Mr.

Bennett,

you have systematically abused your corporate position,

orchestrated multi-state procurement fraud,

laundered nearly a million dollars through illicit offshore shell companies,

and betrayed the public trust for personal greed,

' the judge stated,

his gaze fixed coldly on Ethan’s bowed head.

'This court finds no mitigating circumstances.

I sentence you to fourteen years in a federal correctional facility without the possibility of parole,

followed by three years of supervised release.

' A murmur rippled through the gallery as the gavel struck the sounding block with a sharp,

final crack.

Ethan turned his head slowly,

scanning the courtroom until his eyes met mine in the back row.

For a fraction of a second,

our gazes locked across the vast gulf of the courtroom.

There was no anger in my eyes,

no triumph,

and no lingering affection—only absolute,

profound emptiness.

He looked away first,

his shoulders slumping under the weight of his own destruction as federal marshals stepped forward to escort him back down the corridor toward indefinite confinement.
