Chapter 4 - The First Heartbeat of Betrayal

I sprinted down the linoleum corridor,

my white coat billowing behind me like the wings of a predatory bird,

my mind racing faster than my pounding footsteps.

When I burst into ICU room four,

Nurse Jenkins was already pumping Ethan’s chest with frantic intensity,

while the resident physician fumbled with the epinephrine syringe.

'What happened?' I demanded,

shoving the resident aside to take direct command of the bedside monitor and airway management.

'V-fib arrest!' the resident shouted over the shrieking alarm of the telemetry monitor.

'His potassium levels spiked,

and his heart just gave out under the strain!' 'Clear the bed!' I ordered,

slamming my hand onto the defibrillator charge button.

'Two hundred joules,

clear!' Once again,

the electric shock tore through Ethan’s limp frame,

causing his arms to jerk outward in a macabre dance of forced resuscitation.

One second passed.

Two seconds.

Three endless eternity-seconds.

Then,

the rhythmic,

jagged peaks returned to the screen,

stabilizing into a slow,

weary sinus rhythm that signaled he had pulled back from the edge of the grave once more.

I exhaled a breath I didn't realize I had been holding,

wiping a layer of cold sweat from my forehead with the back of my sterile-gloved hand.

As I turned to adjust his intravenous potassium drip,

the glass door of the ICU room clicked open,

and Mia slipped inside,

defying hospital protocols in her sheer desperation.

She didn't look at the monitors or the tangled web of IV lines; her tear-filled eyes locked immediately onto Ethan’s pale,

unconscious face.

She reached out,

her trembling fingers brushing gently against his bruised cheek,

whispering words of devotion that felt like acid being poured directly into my open wounds.

'He can't leave me,

' she choked out,

her hand sliding down from his cheek to rest protectively over her rounded stomach.

'He promised our baby a future.

' I stood on the opposite side of the hospital bed,

separated from my cheating husband and his pregnant mistress by a gulf of deception so vast it defied human comprehension.

'He made a lot of promises,

Miss Brooks,

' I said,

my voice cutting through her sobs with surgical coldness.

'He promised me fidelity five years ago in front of two hundred guests.

He promised me honesty every single morning over coffee.

Yet here we are,

sharing a dying man in an intensive care unit.

' Mia flinched,

looking up at me with a mixture of guilt,

fear,

and lingering defiance.

'You think you know everything,

Dr.

Bennett,

' she whispered defensively.

'You think he’s just some monster who played us both.

But you don't know what he told me about you.

He said you were emotionally dead inside,

that you abandoned your marriage long before he ever looked at another woman.

' Her words struck a raw nerve,

forcing a bitter laugh from my lips.

'Oh,

I abandoned our marriage?' I challenged,

stepping closer around the foot of the bed.

'Is that what he told you to justify draining our joint savings account to buy your suburban nest? Is that why he kept two separate cell phones,

two separate wallets,

and two entirely separate identities?' Mia’s breath hitched,

her eyes widening in genuine shock.

'Two wallets? Two cell phones?' she repeated,

shaking her head in denial.

'No.

Ethan wouldn't.

.

.

he told me he had an old phone for work emergencies.

He didn't have another wallet.

' 'Open your eyes,

Mia,

' I snapped,

my patience evaporating completely.

'The man lying on this bed is a master illusionist.

He didn't just lie to you; he constructed an entire fortress of lies,

and we were both trapped inside the outer walls.

' Before she could process the revelation,

a nurse hurried into the room,

holding a plastic evidence bag containing Ethan’s personal belongings recovered from the ambulance crew.

'Dr.

Bennett,

security brought his personal items from the crash site.

His wallet,

keys,

and phone.

' I stared at the clear plastic bag resting on the counter.

Inside,

glinting under the harsh fluorescent lights,

lay two identical leather wallets,

May you like

side by side,

waiting to spill every dark secret my husband had worked so hard to bury.
