Chương 6 - Unmasking the Shadow Account

The clock in the estate’s study struck midnight, but the lights remained blazing as our investigative team worked through the night.
Arthur sat on the leather sofa, his laptop open, surrounded by bank transfers and encrypted email logs extracted from Camden’s desktop.
Across the table, Nora was cross-referencing trade registrations with filings from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
"We found the secondary trigger, Vivian," Arthur said, rubbing his exhausted eyes and gesturing for me to look at his screen.
I walked over, holding a fresh mug of black coffee, and leaned over his shoulder.
"Look at the short positions taken against Alden Meridian stock three weeks ago," Arthur explained, pointing a weathered finger at a transaction column.
"A boutique hedge fund registered in Zurich, called 'Helvetic Capital,' took a forty-million-dollar short position against our logistics division."
"Who owns the beneficial interest in Helvetic?" I asked, my instincts immediately signaling corporate treason.
"The shares are held by an anonymous nominee trust in Vaduz, Liechtenstein," Arthur said, clicking to another encrypted document.
"But Nora managed to pull the IP access logs from the digital authorization signatures."
Nora looked up from her screen, her expression grim and focused.
"The trades were authorized from the private Wi-Fi network aboard your Gulfstream while Camden was flying back from Zurich last month," Nora confirmed.
"The same flight where he claimed he was attending an aerospace safety symposium."
The full scope of Camden’s treachery hit me like a physical blow, colder and more calculating than any petty marital betrayal.
"He wasn't just planning to sell our international routes to Julian Vance," I said, piecing the puzzle together in the quiet room.
"He was actively manufacturing a crisis to drive our stock price down before the sale."
"Exactly," Arthur agreed, leaning back with a dark scowl.
"If the international routes were suddenly tied up in regulatory disputes or failed audits, Alden Meridian's share price would plummet by thirty percent."
"Vance could then acquire our operational infrastructure for pennies on the dollar through a hostile tender offer."
"And Camden’s short position through Helvetic Capital would yield a personal profit of nearly fifteen million dollars."
"He was shorting his own wife's company while using her aircraft to execute the trades," I whispered, the sheer audacity of the scheme breathtaking.
"He would have destroyed fifteen hundred jobs across our maintenance facilities just to ensure he had independent wealth."
Nora leaned forward, pulling up a secondary communication log.
"There’s more," she said, her voice dropping.
"We found an encrypted email exchange between Camden and Lila Monroe sent through a private ProtonMail server."
"What did he tell her?" I asked, bracing myself for the depths of his deceit.
Nora read the transcript directly from her monitor.
"'Don't worry about Vivian’s tantrums in New York. The audit leak is already scheduled for next Thursday.'"
"'Once the SEC opens the preliminary inquiry into the maintenance funds, the board will panic and force her to accept Vance's buyout.'"
"'By summer, we will be permanently established in Lake Como, and she will be spending the next five years defending herself from shareholder lawsuits.'"
I closed my eyes for five seconds, allowing the cold, absolute clarity of survival to purge every lingering remnant of sentimentality.
Nine years of marriage, nine years of shared holidays, private conversations, and supportive smiles, had all been reduced to a predatory trap.
Camden hadn't just strayed; he had attempted to frame me for his own financial crimes to destroy my reputation and steal my father’s life work.
"Does Julian Vance’s name appear directly on any of the Helvetic Capital incorporation papers?" I asked, opening my eyes.
"Not directly," Arthur said.
"Vance is too smart for that; he uses third-tier intermediaries and off-market derivative swaps."
"However, the managing partner of Helvetic is Vance’s personal wealth manager in Geneva, a man named Christian Durant."
"Can we link Durant to the Swiss account that received the transfer from Camden's Delaware shell company?" I demanded.
Arthur smiled, a predatory, victorious grin that took ten years off his lined face.
"Ten minutes ago, the compliance officer at Credit Suisse flagged the transfer because of the lis pendens we filed in federal court this morning," Arthur said.
"The four hundred and eighty thousand dollars Camden wired last Tuesday is currently frozen in an intermediary escrow account."
"And Durant just sent a panicky, unencrypted email to Camden's personal address demanding to know why the compliance team is asking questions."
"They are turning on each other," Nora observed, looking up with satisfaction.
"Because rats only stay loyal as long as the ship is floating," I said, setting my coffee cup down with absolute resolve.
"Arthur, prepare an emergency referral to the Department of Justice, Public Integrity and Financial Crimes Division."
"I want this entire dossier hand-delivered to the United States Attorney’s office in lower Manhattan by seven o'clock tomorrow morning."
"And Nora, call the security team at the Greenwich Country Club."
